Wing Dip

Post by urbanmadness » Sat Mar 18, 2017 11:04 pm

Yup, I done did it.....

I'm working on plastidipping a gl1500. Flat Black, of course....

Why???? Well the paint is in really bad shape. The clear was pealing to the point that it was even cyrstalized on the bags. But why o why plasti dip? Well, if I don't like it or decide to paint it later, I can just peal/scrub it off, then prep as usual. I didn't want to tear the bike down all the way, the truck lid is cracked and leaks bad, and it would probably take me a week, just to smooth it all out, and plasti dip covers a multitude of "sins".

I've been looking for a trunk lid, but I haven't been able to find one a reasonable price. And right now, I just simply can't afford to dump alot of money into the bike. Mechanically, it's in great shape, it just looks rough.

so After a day of work, the bags and truck are almost done. I have to reinstall the wing and the latches. My buddy was "helping" and took them apart when they didn't' need to be.

Here are some pictures.

Just finished... One weekend, 3 cans of plasti-dip, and like 10 cans of rockstar and friends hanging around to "help"... :)

That looks really good in pictures. It looks just like the Black Denim paint job that Harley brought out for their mean street machines. Congrats on a great job.

With the wineberry paint really looking shabby and tired (and I loved the wineberry), this really cleaned up the bike.

I still need to do a few things. The truck lid is really badly cracked and broken. I did re-enforce it ABS cement, but it's just sooo far gone at this point. I also will be redoing the seat in a few months. I also want to flush the brake and clutch fluids. I have no idea how old they are, but the clutch MC does show signs of water contamination. IE a little rust when I checked the fluid last week.

I did the timing belts, changed the oil and put in a set of plugs at the end of last season and put new tires on it at the beginning of last season, so mechanically it's in really good shape.

I am really liking the "new" look and I hope that everyone enjoys the video.

A couple of question.
Where did you get the Plasti-Dip?
What did you use and how did you apply it?
I've not seen it in a spray can, only a tool handle dip can.

The finish looks good.

I like it man. I did the bumpers and grill on my trucks 4 years ago and its still holding strong.
A little tip for you. Warm up some water and drop the can in for a few minutes. It will lay so much better than with a cold can. I guess since the pressure increases in the can it aerosolizes the dip more and it lays super smooth, almost has like a velvet look.

Yup that's the stuff I used. I still wonder if I can use lacquer over it tho. It would be cool to do some red pin strip over it...

I thought about doing that to my 89 and might still have to if I can't get my friends 93 down here so I can swap some parts and sell mine. Wished I would have tried it a couple of years back. We did a motorcycle awareness ride mid summer and when I saw mine on the news that night....well.....it just looked bad. When that candy wineberry dies off it go's fast. My trunk looked silver on the T.V. Gonna head on over to amazon and look. Might do it anyway couldn't hurt to look better if I ever get the old dog up for sale.
