2000 Valkyrie Interstate shifting problems.

Post by Ed1970 » Fri Apr 28, 2017 4:38 pm

Just picked up a 2000 Valkyrie Interstate. Replaced all the fluids including the clutch fluid. Made sure I bleed the clutch and probably over did it. For sure no air in the system. The bike will only shift into 1st and 2nd gear. Won't shift into 3rd 4th and 5th. Also have a problem finding neutral. After playing with it for a while I do manage to get it into neutral. Any suggestions as to what it might be.

Welcome!
Did it shift before you flushed and bled it?
Most bikes once they're moving you can shift them pretty easily even without using the clutch.
If I'da known it would last this long,I'da taken better care of it.

That's the thing. I don't know if it was ok before I flushed and bled the system. I bought the bike in the middle of winter. Started it up but could not ride it.
In stand still it shifts to first and second, but when I try to shift to 3rd and higher nothing. Won't budge. Going to try to ride it and see, but as of now like I said having a hard time finding neutral and can't shift past second.

If I'm understanding you, you haven't tried driving, or shifting while driving ? I'm not sure I've ever tried shifting through gears at a standstill. I don't know why I would.
Anyway, if it turns out that you really can't get the bike to hit 3, 4, or 5 while riding, you might check the shift levers for any odd alignment issues, or binding against body parts, and if you know what a shift stabilizer is, you might check to see if the PO installed one. When I installed mine a few years ago, the alignment wasn't just right, and it created some interesting shifter issues. For instance, you go down for 1st, then up for second. If the lever doesn't fully return from that up shift, to its natural return position, you'll never get it to hit 3rd, 4th, etc. If that is binding up for any reason after the first up shift to 2nd, it would explain your inability to achieve the next shift, and possibly your neutral issue as well.
