Led headlight conversion

Post by Mechmark » Tue Jul 18, 2017 9:18 am

Hi I have a1999 gl1500 special edition and have replaced the bulbs on either side of the headlights with led replacement and am considering going with headlight led conversion, but have seen some talk about the reflector assembly not focusing the less and projecting
The majority of the light straight ahead...the headlight led I am referringn to are the ones from cyclonic with the braided wire heat sink,

Looking for advise on this thanks

After looking and reading (a lot), I decided my stock headlight worked well enough. I did however add some 18 watt L.E.D. lights to my lower forks to use as driving lights and to be seen better. They light up the road, along with my headlight, in front of me really well, and make the bike much more visible to others.

I don't have a pic of them mounted, but here's a link to the lights I used. The existing mounting brackets were pretty flimsy, but I removed them and adapted some stronger ones I fabbed. For now, they're held in place with a hose clamp around the fork tube. I'll figure out a better mount over the winter, but they are more than adequate for the time being and easily adjusted. Quick, easy and cheap....just like me!

In general any headlight lens with "Flutes" won't work very well with LED's ( GL1100, 1200, 1500)
There will be lots of light output, but it will be scattered and hard to aim .
The flutes are designed for point source, NOT LED's....

For almost the same amount of money, you can get HID conversion kits for even these lenses ...

Hid's are " almost " a point source, like your OEM incandescants.

You'd need two bulbs, I guess
Something like this :

For $25 tp $35 from Ebay ( China ) or around $70 from local german bulb supplier

I converted my GL1200 to HID .. Fiddly to install, but quite easy to aim , and nice and bright . I'm quite hapy

I bought the led headlights from SoCal for my 94 GL1500, love them. They make a huge difference at night and even day time. Easy to install, just plug and play.

I prefer the HID's. The. HID's presents other issues but they do provide outstanding light.

I am using the OEM type bulbs which are 60/55w and they are so fine that I can't see any reason to replace them.

If it is legal in your county/state, you could try them.

I was running the SilverStar bulbs but the reasons I switched to HID projector lamps were for the color and the sharp High/Low cut off.

I installed the pathfinder kit and all i got was a ton of noise from the radio and CB. Do I need to return them?

I didn't experience any noise with my Pathfinder LED lights.
Send them an email to see if there is anything that can be done differently to prevent the noise.
That said, if you are not satisfied with your Pathfinder LED lights, you should be able to return them for a refund.
