REPAIR SERVICE for 1988 - 2000 Honda Goldwing GL1500 Gauge Cluster Speedometer LCD Screen

Post by dharmabum75 » Fri Aug 25, 2017 8:43 am

Hello! My name is Jennifer and I work for Tanin Auto Electronix. We are a WI based business that specializes in vehicle auto electronic repairs, specifically for instrument clusters, climate controls, and radio lighting, as well as selling DIY repair parts like LCD screens that we design and manufacture. We sell to customers all over the country, via our website, our Ebay store and on Amazon.

As an employee who rides motorcycles, I have a desire to help people find affordable repair options, since we all know how much more dealerships charge us!

We are excited to share a new repair service for the 1988-2000 Goldwing GL1500 LCD screens-

http://www.taninautoelectronix.com/Prod ... ter_repair

We also know that many people are DIYers so by the end of September, we will have enough LCD screens in stock to offer them for sale as well. We will also offer genuine Honda backlighting bulbs and blue bulb caps that almost always should be replaced while doing the LCD.

We have published a video on how to install the LCD so people are able to prepare for their own repairs. That can be found here:

Feel free to reach out to us with any questions. We are excited to be able to assist in repairing any malfunctioning LCD screens for our Gold Wing Forum friends!

Thank you,

Jennifer D.

Excellent! Do you know the cost of the LCD screen by itself?

They are not offering the LCD screen by itself yet Erd. They expect to do that in September and have not given a price for just the screen yet. That 349.99 price is if you send in yours and they do the work including replacing bulbs.

A reasonable price would be excellent, especially when there is another choice like below.

Wow! I am SO glad to see this available now!! Mine has its foibles (in cold, damp weather, while parked, it stops displaying properly, loses time, etc.), but the LCD hasn't started to bleed. Yet. When it does, there's a FIX!! Woohoo!!

Still out of my price range. I have the creeping black death. Hey send me a unit to review! I'll give you a review, real-world install video and steady updates for long term durability.

They sell the bulb & cap for $39.99, Honda's MSRP is under $5.00 for the 2 parts. Buyer beware!!!!

Their KIT price includes 4x t10 and 2x t7 and blue caps for all I think...

Same price (including VAT) in csmnl.com (Holland), don't know my local Honda dealer pricing if even available...
T7 seem to be unknown in local carpartstores, I took flasher bulbs (t7's) to lcd and put orange leds (t5) to flashers, works perfect :)

And yes, made an order for new lcd... oh boy it's like waiting christmas... :D

If they are sending that many bulbs it's OK, but the LCD only uses 1 bulb & cap. Maybe someone has ordered the bulb kit and can confirm the number of bulbs.

You get 6 bulbs and caps so it is not as bad as it sounds.

Not to comment on the price of the bulbs, but to give a different idea, here is my order from Aliexpress, note that the price is for 10 pieces. I have been using two of them for 1 year and no issues so far.

I preferred cold white color after trying a blue one. Cold white LED provides more contrast than blue one. With the white LED you will still have blue back lighting, and nice clear white needles of the fuel and temp gauges.

A final note about the shipping, I can normally receive an order from Aliexpress in 8-21 days from China to my country when shipped as registered air mail.

I have used other LED bulbs in Speedo's and found that they are too long. Can't tell how long these are but the ones I tried bent when inserted and didn't last long.

The LED that I have shared fits perfectly to the LCD bulb housing. You should only tighten the contacts inside the connector with a screwdriver since the LED has a thinner base than a regular bulb.

For a solution to your problem, you could grind the head of the LED bulb until the desired length. And when you grind the lense the light will disperse around better and you will not have hot spots.

Or you could search for a shorter bulb like below.

The LCD screen itself sells for less than $150. Replacing it yourself would not cost you anything. But of course it's always up to the owner to make their own decision.

Personally, I’d replace the panel.

- First, an unserviceable panel will have a huge impact on the bike’s resale value.

- Second, who knows how long they’ll be available? It would be a shame to finally decide to do it 3-4 years down the road, only to discover they’re no longer available.

- And third, aside from the time & radio station displays, the display is also the only way to check & adjust your rear suspension.

I couldn’t leave mine like that. It would drive me nuts - like driving a car with non-working gauges, even though, at least temporarily, they’re still available at a cheap price.

My panel, while still working, is starting to show signs of trouble (blanks out on damp, cold days, etc.), so I’m planning on buying one & putting it away against the time when mine finally fails. Cheap insurance, particularly considering a brand new panel costs less than a new tire...

I suppose "too expensive" is a relative term. Compared to the cost of a new gauge cluster (when you could actually buy one new), it's very cheap. I managed to find what was probably the last new cluster in the country a couple of years ago. At $700, that was expensive. But I managed to get a brand new cluster, with the white gauges that I prefer, and no more issues from the '96-'97 LCD humidity problem. I replaced the LCD on my old gauges with the Tanin screen, and was blown away at how good the old gauge cluster looked. It was perfect. It still had the humidity sensitivity issue, and I sold it on Ebay with a thorough explanation and understanding of that issue to the buyer. But, other than the intermittent blank LCD, the buyer got a cluster that was in excellent shape, with 60K miles on the odometer. I highly recommend the Tanin screen to anyone with an LCD problem. It's a very good quality product.

I did post a how -too article on this subject -viewtopic.php?f=14&t=42427- if you can get a second hand set of clocks you can replace the screen yourself :D :D :D :D
