Multi meter help please

Post by bohdan » Mon Oct 09, 2017 3:08 pm

Hello Fellow Goldwingers. Well I am at trying to figure out how to read resistance on the pulse generators. Pulled the plug above the cooling fan. It's s four prong plug. I have to read resistance across the terminals and I must be doing something wrong. I get Zilch. Tried both sides of the plug and still nothing. I need to be getting between 400/500 ohms. Never did resistance before. It seems like there is some dielectric grease there. It's a 93 and probably first time it's been unplugged. Any tips on what I am doing wrong? Mighty obliged.

You can use either of the two connectors in the pictures below.
Set the multimeter for ohm measurement, attach the probes of the multimeter to the wires accordingly.

If you already know this, the grn/blk wire may be broken, because both PGs share the same grn/blk wire.

Note that grn/blk wire splits into two wires and changes color to be yellow and blue at the C63 connector (over the right fan).

I assume (you know what that means) that at this late date, he has it figured out. It could have also been that he had an open circuit if he was doing it correctly to begin with.

No I haven't quite figured I tout yet. Looking at the picture of the manual and shown above, it shows a pigtail. Don't know exactly why this has to be this way and why can't one simply got the separated connectors to read resistance. Need to pull out the wire as shown? On another note, maybe I was reading the wrong side? I was reading the female side. Should I be reading the male side. the side that is in the holder? Mighty obliged.

You need to be measuring the side going toward the pulse generators. They are behind the timing belt covers and the connector you pulled out is where to measure from. Try to put the meter probes in from the back side of the connector and not push into the pins where they plug into the other side. You could easily get them deformed where they will not make a good contact when plugged back in.

Thanks Erdeniz, well.... I guess I was doing the measurement off of the wrong side. I was doing the female side. This clearly shows I should be doing the other side. go figure..... Thanks again for showing me this pix. Cheers
