engine noise

hyd. lifter noise, started on the left side now on the right as well. also burning rubber smell when rpm is about 3500 and higher. the lifter noise goes away somewhat after it is warmed up what should i be looking for?

Since you mentioned a noise with rubber smell, I would suspect, the alternator rubber dampers are bad or timing belts are loose.

Definitely do not start that engine again until you check the condition of the timing belts. If one (or both!) of the belts is failing to the point that the timing is going out and you're hearing valvetrain noise, then you're in danger of a belt breaking and serious damage occurring to the engine.

Pull the timing belt cover off and check those belts. I suspect you're going to need to replace them - and possibly a tensioner, which I'm willing to bet has a failing bearing.

I'm with WA on this...it sounds to me like a timing belt tensioner failing. Once one of the belts drags enough to slip a tooth or two, catastrophic engine failure will follow about a millisecond later. :shock:
