After giving my 94-1500A a month off, I tried starting it today and it seems as if the fuel is not getting to where it needs to get. It cranks hard, but wont turn over. I'm guessing it's the fuel filter or fuel pump. changing the filter is something i can do (changed it a few years ago, but the pump is another story.

How can I tell if the pump is bad?

Also,I have smelled gas while riding and at a stop , but it comes and goes.

Could this possibly an easy fix by just changing the filter. would a bad fuel filter (used up / old) stop the flow of fuel that"s causing the issue, or am i dreaming and it's more likely the fuel pump.

Could it be the fuel lines?

Where do i get a pump if needed and whats the cost. How big job is it chging out the pump. ..Limited skill set here.

Are you sure the pump is getting voltage?

Pull the seat off, a 2 minute job.

Put a voltmeter on the 'B' terminal and watch it when you turn the key on.
It should jump to battery voltage for 2-3 seconds and then go away.

When you push the Starter Button, it should go to full voltage for a few seconds, and if the engine does not start, it will go away again.

If it is getting power to run, pull the fuel line off, see if it will pump out a cup or two of fuel in about 5 seconds if you jumper the 'B' terminal to the battery.

If that works, install a new gas filter.

Now another good test assuming you have proven the pump is good:

Pull the fuel line off the left side of the Vacuum Shutoff Petcock, push on a rubber hose:

1:) at key turn on, there will not be any fuel thru that petcock.
2) Push the starter button, engine vacuum should open the petcock and allow fuel to flow.

The Vacuum Petcock is infamous for having diaphragm pinhole leaks.

When you say "it won't turn over", I assume you mean that the engine does, indeed, spin, but doesn't fire up.

Simple things first - you say that you've smelled gas when riding from time to time. That can be a simple (and very common) issue with the gas cap venting. If it clogs up, it can prevent air from getting into the tank to replace the fuel that's being used, forming a vacuum in the tank. That vacuum can be strong enough to overcome the fuel pump, and prevent fuel from getting to the carbs.

So, the first test I would do would be to open the gas cap, and try starting it again. If it does start, soak the cap in cleaner or solvent to clean out the crud. It may be as easy as that. If it doesn't start with the gas cap off, start through the rest of the tests suggested by AZg1800.

I know you stated it cranks hard but the 1500 won't start unless the battery has a full charge. The ECU requires at least 10.? volts to fire. Try charging the battery before you spend more time looking.

I'm not trying to be a smart a.. ! but did you make sure the kill switch is in the on position? believe me I know, I have done this myself

Some later years of the 1500 will not operate the starter with the kill switch in the off position. I believe the 97 is one of them.

I have had the joke played on me by "friends", when I got off my bike to go inside "that building" at a rest stop, came back out and the bike would not start.... would not even roll over....

yep, Kill Switch had been moved by that friend.....

I informed all present that such stuff is not funny, and my bike is OFF limits.
I didn't appreciate it that day.

I think it was from 1997-2000 the kill switch being off would not let the starter work either. His is a 94 model and they would run the starter even if the kill switch was off. That kill switch being off on his would cause his symptoms.

Would be kinda nice to find out if the problem was fixed, I am always curious to see what the end results turn out to be if there are any at all.

california flu has got me down, havent had time to look at my bike. visited my Navy son and his family in Norfolk Va. came back sick. hopefully i'll feel like going at it next week.

i really do appreciate all of you guys helping with this issue.

My son just retired from 24 years in the Navy. Now I'm helping him work on a boat too. Sure hope I don't get that flu bug, got enough problems as it is.

Thanks for the info, going to get back at it this weekend. john, i will go thru the steps you suggested and hopefully its one of the easy fixes. I looked at the OEM fuel pump costs, kinda steap at $280, figure i better go thru all the other steps before investing in the pump.

Fuel pump trouble is not an uncommon problem for these beasts, , it has given 24 yrs of "good" service, but that IS a long time for an electrical pump. There is a VERY CLEAN solution to a blown fuel pump for about 1/3 the price of an OEM from Mother Honda. I replaced my "blown" pump (26 yr old bike) for around $80 (but I'd bet the prices have gone up) a year ago.

I hope the pump on your '94 is OK, and the problem is something inexpensive and simple to fix,, , , , BUT if you need to replace it, , Its an easy inexpensive job.

Try checking the two connectors on the kill switch. Remove the two screws under the handlebar and remove the switch. These screw connectors have a bad habit of loosening after years and miles of vibration. If these connections become loose you will not have power to fuel pump or ignition. I check these screws annually on my 92.
