Installing Kury ISO grips on my GL1500 - Throttle question

Post by bstjohn1966 » Mon Mar 12, 2018 11:40 am

Is there a trick to removing the throttle cables from the old grip? I've replaced quite a few sets of these over the years on various motorcycles but none have been this much of a pain in the butt to get the throttle cables loose. I'm afraid I am going to snap a cable if I pull any harder.

Thanks in advance.

They do seem too tight and impossible to get loose. But once you loosen up the adjuster and just fiddle with them they come right out.

If I understand you correctly, you are trying to install the Kury ISO grips to replace the stock grips? If that is the case, there is no need to remove the throttle cables. Just remove the old grip from the bars and put the Kurys on. The old ones can be removed from the throttle by either using compressed air shot up under the grip or just cutting them off. I usually just cut mine off using a box knife down the length of the grip then just peel them off. Put some adhesive on the bar and slide the new ones on.

The issue with the Kury grip is that it has the throttle cable fittings built into them and I don't see a way to get that portion of the grip out. I tried twisting it out hoping that it would slide out but no luck. With that portion of the grip intact it cannot slide over the factory sleeve.

Well I took the easy way out. I just ordered another set without the throttle insert. I bought the generic version for less than $18.00. They'll be here in a couple days so we'll see how it goes... Thanks for all the input, much appreciated.
