Busted lower cowls

Post by DarthJ »

Well, went to reinstall my lower cowl lights as I had to remount the brackets due to the epoxy not holding. Drilled holes, put the screws in, even added rubber washers, and I guess I overtightened the screws. Saw one crack, figured "ok, i'll reinforce that area, tomorrow, no biggie. Should have pulled the brackets IMMEDIATELY. Basically, the areas the brackets were in all but shattered.

Ouch, that sucks. It looks kinda bad but are you going to try and repair it or is it too far gone? Nice color by the way.
Winging it every chance I get 8-)

Our bikes are old and plastics can get brittle. I think there are still parts sold on this site. Maybe you can pick up another set of lowers and try to repaint them.

It;s not plastic it's ABS..use ABS cement to repair and ABS "plastic" to reinforce..the black plumbing pipe is ABS, you can buy sheets of ABs on line; and that's the cement you should use black ABS

There are many bike dismantlers that have those for sale. You may be able to even match the color-or be really close. Before buying different lowers, I'd try patching with thin ABS sheet and ABS cement, as suggested. You've got nothing to lose! I order the sheet online and if I can't find the ABS cement at the local hardware store, RV and mobile home places usually have it in stock.

Thanks, guys. I'd try ABS repair, but they're too far gone. The photo makes them look salvageable when in reality, the rubber molding is ALL that's holding the pieces together. Keeping an eye out for good ones (preferably from an SE so the proper light mount is there, lol) Really not worried about color at this point, I can always paint, just want the panels. My girl is a good sport about it, she teased me about it, but said "It's ok, babe, take your time and find good pieces" Got her hooked, and we are supposed to hit a rally next month, but that depends on finding panels, or we will end up taking the cage.

Ok, update, thanks to eBay, I have lower cowls on the way and hopefully might have them Monday. They come off an SE, so the mounts are in place for the lights, even better, there are screws still, so won't have to hunt. They don't come with the fins, but I salvaged the ones off my old cowls including the screws, so I'm set there. Only downside is color, you see the lovely deep blue I have, well, add Bermuda green lower cowls. Not going to bother painting till I can paint the whole bike, the parts will fit and that's all I give a damn about right now, lol.

Well, "new" cowls arrived, a little later than was supposed to, but whatever, they're here and on. Bike looks weird with the clashing colors, but heck with it, she's together and paint later will fix that.

Yeah those two colors aren't bad together... I bet if you painted them silver that would look really nice, sorta like the color scheme you could get on some of the later 1800's.

My left lower cowl was in terrible shape when I bought the bike. I found a set of teal cowls (same color as my bike) but the seller wanted $200 plus shipping per side. I found one for about $70 in red and bought it. I am going to plastidip both sides black and see how it looks.

Plasti-dipped both sides and the front center cowl. I'm satisfied with the results.

A couple of question.
Where did you get the Plasti-Dip?
What did you use and how did you apply it?
I've never seen it in a spray can.

The finish looks good.

I got it at Home Depot. Amazon has it too. It's not hard to apply, just multiple light coats...goes on just like spray paint.

Thanks, until today I had no idea it came in spray cans. I've only seen the tool handle dip.
