Re-installing cooling fans on 92 wing se

Post by Lutzinmn » Wed Apr 11, 2018 10:06 pm

Does anyone have any tips on how to install cooling fans? I had no luck today. I get half way and it gets stuck. Tried both sides. Thanks.

I put a putty knife on the back side of the fans to help them slide into place. Try to get the front where it needs to go then put the putty knife between the fan and the wires etc that are behind it to help it go in. I found that helped me get mine back in place.

I’ve had mine in and out a couple times now and sometimes the little plastic post on the shroud sticking down that goes into the mounting hole would catch on things, look for that, tipping it up as you work it in helps.

Other times the rubber skirt that goes up against the radiator would catch on things so I bent a metal coat hangar with a hook at the end that I stuck in past the fan blade to manipulate it as I was working it in to un-catch it.

Should I have the radiators out? Would that help or will that make it hard to install the radiators after? I will give it another shot this evening.

I don't that would help because they're not what's getting in the way when trying to fit the fans back in. Maybe try wiping a protectant such as Armorall on the rubber skirt on the shroud and on some of the bike frame parts to help it slip in. Also in the following pic you can see the rubber grommet (red arrow) just behind the radiator that you have to get that post on the shroud in. Wipe some protectant on the areas with the green lines, these are areas the you have to work the shroud past.

In addition to the posts above, sometimes the wires over the fan may prevent the fan to go forward, pull aside them.

On the left side, the bolt on the fan may create problem, because it is very close to the throttle cruise cancel unit, you may need a new bolt with smaller head.

I have my fans in. I want to thank you all for your great tips. I used a water and soap solution on the rubber of fan, bottom of fan and all the areas marked in green in pic from above. I also used a bungee to hold the above wires up. ''This worked great. The left side went straight in. The right side was a little more work because of the cables and wires coming down the frame. The way these went in this time, I would have no reservations on removing them again. Again thanks for the help.

Aside from removing the radiators is there anything else that needs to be removed or disconnected for this job? I'm assuming you replaced the radiator hoses or maybe had a coolant leak you were trying to fix?

I've got everything but new hose clamps and that crossover hose for the top of the rads.

To remove the radiator fan/shroud assemblies? You only need to remove the lower cowl and lower side fairings and they are right there, not much in your way to remove them.

I was looking for a coolant leak. All hoses looked like they were replaced, they were in great shape. I had a leak from the thermostat gasket. Replaced it. Replaced the cross tube. It was hard and brittle. I recommend replacing the cross tube clamps with a screw clamps. Had some leaks from loose hose connections. Honda had plastic around the metal tube that the hoses connected to. Removed that stuff and made nice tight connections. Do you have a leak also, or do your fans not work?

I dont have any leaks but as far as I know my hoses are 27yrs old. Been reading up on changing these and it sounds like some work. But after fixing just about everything on my bike I figure this is some good preventive maintenance. I've given some thought to replacing vacuum hoses while I'm in there but dont want to have my bike down that long. If I had another bike I'd probably just go for it.

Oh, you meant to get to stuff like the thermostat, not just remove the fans, lol  I suppose that makes better sense!
