Help....!

Post by Robbo9100 » Fri Apr 20, 2018 6:23 am

Hi, I have a 1992 gl 1500 and she let me down yesterday for the first time ever, starts no problem but stalls when selecting first, bypassed the side stand switch but still the same, have since tested it and it is fine anyway, bled the clutch and new fluid throughout as I understand this can cause this problem, still the same thing when selecting first. Incidentally the clutch lever was a bit floppy prior to the breakdown... I’ve never been able to start the bike in gear with the clutch in but it’s never been a problem... any help would be greatly appreciated.. checked all the usual stuff associated with this issue....cheers everyone

Does it grind, jump or try to move when you put it in gear or just die?

I think about the Tilt sensor, it is a modification for that bike...

It wouldn't start at all if it was the BAS. It has to be something in the wiring to the side stand switch. When you bypassed it did you simply jump between the grn/wt & green or jumper the grn/wt to ground?

I joined the green/white and green together and earthed the yellow black, tried it with and without the earth and other options with the 3 wires, joining the greens took the light off the dash but made no difference still stalled, it’s driving me nuts

Try just earthing the grn/wt. If that doesn't fix it there must be a break in the wire between there and the ECU. Earthing the Y/B should only make the light come on.

I’ll try that in the morning and let you know how it goes, where is the écu, above the rear fender?

The ECU is behind the right side inner fairing cover. It will be down below the fuel filter.

Ok thanks, incidentally would not disconnecting the switch from its plug completely take it out of play?

No, the ECU has to sense ground (earth) on the grn/wt wire or it kills the engine when you put it in gear. Disconnecting the switch is the same as having the side stand down except the light doesn't come on.

No. The ECU has to see a ground from the side stand or else it will kill the ignition if you put it in gear.

Ooops. Dave beat me to it.

Bugger, got my hopes up with the earth of the green/white.. unfortunately no difference, so is it a case of tracing back to the écu now to verify the green/white is not broken or the other 2 wires also?

Yes, I think that should be the fist thing to check in a process of elimination. Hope you figure it out soon.

Do I take it there is just the one green/white wire in the loom going to the écu or is there loads, as you may of gathered I’m not the best at wiring, I can build an engine with my eyes closed, but wiring... it’s all bloody Russian to me....😳

There is only 1 grn/wt wire at the ECU, but it is a 28 pin connector so there are lots of wires there. You have to keep your eyes open to do electrical work.

I do hope for all our sanity's sake, you are earthing the wire from the harness, not from the switch.

Lol, yes I have earthed it from the female plug at the end of the switch wire on the harness, left hand side beside the tank

Had time to work on the bike today and tested the earth wire back to the écu from plug of the side stand switch in the loom, all good... any ideas what to check next, still starts and runs fine until it’s put in gear

In that case it must be an internal ECU problem.

Tested all on ecu to do with side stand and all tested well on continuity so before I burn the f inf thing anyone else have an idea why my perfect running bike stalls when put in gear, there must be something else causing this problem because I’ve tested everything in relation to the side stand switch...

Its a long shot but have you tested the gearshift sensor and the reverse switch also check the clutch switch it linked to the side stand switch and ignition
