Alternator oil seal?
I pulled the alternator from my '99 to replace the oil seal that is in the end of
the alternator itself.
My question is:
Should there be oil in the chamber where the rubber cush drive pads are
located? Or is there another oil seal in the back of the engine to
keep this area dry? Mine is very wet with oil in there.
Thanks guys.

Yes, that is how it is supposed to be.

Ok, thanks MikeB.
Kinda what I figured, but I wanted to see if anyone
knew something that I didn't.

Re: Alternator oil seal?
Is it leaking around or through the alternator?
The large O-Ring is for the circumference around the alternator and the oil seal on the alternator shaft is to keep the oil from going past the shaft into the alternator.

Re: Alternator oil seal?
If you used the OEM o-ring on the OEM alternator, I do not have any idea what you can do to stop it from leaking.

Re: Alternator oil seal?
If you have an aftermarket alternator, most likely of Chinese origin, inconsistencies in the diameter of the alternator would be suspect.

Re: Alternator oil seal?
Hi guys I am just checking in to see if anyone else has had this oil leak problem from the alternator. Mine is still leaking, I can't tell if it's from the
Large o ring or the shaft seal on the alternator. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Alternator oil seal?
Eleven months ago you posted this:
Did you measure the original o-ring dimensions?
Did you replace the o-ring?
Did you look inside the alternator for oil?
If there is oil inside the alternator, it is most likely the shaft seal leaking and not the o-ring.
A leaking o-ring will allow oil to pass between the alternator and the engine, not through the alternator.
What did you discover?Fuzzyswing wrote: ↑Wed May 23, 2018 5:30 am Yes it is a after market alternator

Re: Alternator oil seal?
Yes I measured the o ring groove an it is the same as the one I took off.
Any idea what and where I can get a new alternator seal?

Re: Alternator oil seal?
Alternator shaft seal? Can't really help you with that since I have no idea what alternator you have.Fuzzyswing wrote: ↑Sun Apr 21, 2019 7:14 pm Yes I measured the o ring groove an it is the same as the one I took off.

What you can do it dissemble the alternator or have an alternator repair shop disassemble it for you. Remove the seal and take it to a bearing supply house and have them get a replacement for you.

Re: Alternator oil seal?
SKF 9879 SEAL/Honda has one too (if you got lots of $$$.)
Seal for the alternator drive. (less than $10.00.)
When this seal goes away the alternator gets wet (w/oil.)
BTW, this seal has nothing to do with the Alternator O-Ring Seal. pc
