89 gl1500 headlight issue

Post by Whiloh »

Hi All,
I have an interesting issue with my headlights and not sure where to start. here are the symptoms:
key in off and park positions, low beam on - which it shouldn't be.
key in acc position, low beams on, from what I understand, this is incorrect, the headlights should be off.
key in on position bike not running, low beam does not work, high beam works
bike running, low beams dont work, high beams do.

it looks like i have a short to positive somewhere in the harness, but i dont know where i should start looking. I have pulled the headlight out, and show power on the black/white wire.
tracing back to the right side pocket, i dont know which connectors to look at, as the harness is pretty tight in there, and i cant seem to see power on the easy to reach connectors with the key off, so im not sure where to go next.

I dont have a wiring diagram for the bike, so not sure where to even start on this issue.
any help would be appreciated!

I'm not looking at a schematic yet but this is weird.Your key is off and the low beam is on???
Let's isolate this quick...Remove the low beam relay..does the light go off?
Are there any extra stuff hooked to the bike...Headlight modulator..?Extra wiring and fuses that don't look OEM?..There always suspect.

that solved the issue, I had a shorted relay that had an "unused" wire from the aftermarket handlebar switch bank that had brushed up against the back of the relay box, shorting power to the relay connectors on the back of the relay box.
