Shifter Pivot - Ordered one, now a question

Post by bstjohn1966 » Mon Jul 30, 2018 4:28 pm

I'm pretty stoked, just ordered my shifter pivot from Cyclemax. The shifting is starting to get a little clunky and everything I've read says it should fix it.

My question; the installation video is pretty straight forward, doesn't look like a big deal to install. I'm doing a new oil seal at the same time. Is there anything I need to look out for? Or, are there easier ways to get that old oil seal out?

Thanks in advance.

If you can't easily get the seal out, gently drive a drywall screw a couple turns into the soft part of the seal, then use it to pull the seal out.

Should be pretty straight forward -
I have done 3 of them over the years -- 2 for me and 1 for a riding buddy
Only on my '96 did I have any clearance issues -- I actually removed the header to get to it easier..
Be patient -- it will happen -
In my opinion -- adding the pivot without changing the seal is just not worth doing..
The seal / pivot combination is the key --
On all 3 bikes we noticed an improvement -- a great design and good addition to anyone with a 1500

Taking my gearshift arm off to get to the seal I could get it off far enough to clear the spline teeth, but not come off easily. I pulled the arm toward the back of the bike and used a long large screwdriver to pry it off. Also, used the screwdriver to pry it back on. No damage to the arm or splines. I didn’t want to have to remove engine mounting bolts or exhaust.

Great info! Thank you. My pivot arrives tomorrow so I'll be installing it when I get home from work. Wish me luck.
