loud ticking lower right side of engine...

Post by thesprinklerguy1960 »

I have a loud ticking on the lower right side of my gl1500 that started the other day while warming up with the choke on slightly.. after turning off choke and revving it once it quieted down and was ok... it did this for about 2 or 3 days in a row and the third day I was riding for maybe an hour or so and was headed home doing maybe 65 or 70 mph for maybe the last 5 miles and when I got home the engine was ticking very loudly on the lower right side... I put it on center stand and checked oil was to the first line on dipstick which is normal anyways so I added a small amount and a little seafoam and ran it for a minute... the ticking was not as loud but was still ticking... I had this problem years ago in a car I had and when I got on it hard it would tick for a few minutes but then go away... I was told it was a noisy lifter...after I sold that car the new owner was racing it and threw a rod... I am not a mechanic and can barely change the oil... Now that I hear that familiar ticking I am wondering if there is anything I can do or is something very wrong and in need of a rebuild or is engine ruined... any and all suggestions and responses will be appreciated... I know the answers can not be as silly as my question so thank you all in advance... Chris

Before you panic and sell it for scrap...do the Sea foam again. This time run the full recommended treatment and time..change the oil and filter.Test again.
It does sound like a "lifter"sticking.
The bike does not use a lifter in the same way as your truck had them. They move very little under oil pressure to maintain zero valve lash. They can get stuck.

Thank You so much for your response and I will do just that... I did not know if I should even try anything else without hearing from somebody that knew what was going on... I will let you know the results after I have ran the seafoam and changed the oil... Thanks again... Chris

Does it sound like the ticking in my video below? Because that was a lifter that had leaked down from manually rotating the crankshaft around after changing timing belts, fortunately in my case it pumped back up and quieted down after a mile or so.

I used extra seafoam and ran it for a while until the ticking stopped and changed the oil and filter again and have rode about an hour 3 or 4 times now with no more ticking so I guess whatever debri actually came out this time... that was 2 oil changes and a whole can of seafoam but it worked and bike is up and running on that particular point... thanks again for all the help...Chris

Seafoam, magic in a can!
Glad you got it working. I remember using “Marvel Mystery Oil” years ago to quiet down the lifter noises in high mileage, gunked up car engines.

HI, I HAD THE SAME ISSUE WITH MY 93 1500, I TRIED THE SEAFOAM , CHANGING OIL AND SO ON ONLY TO FIND ON MY FRONT RIGHT EXAUST PIPE ONE NUT WAS MISSING AND THE OTHER I COULD TAKE OFF WITH MY FINGER. PUT A NEW ONE ON AND TIGHTENED THE OTHER , PROBLEM SOLVED. THAT WAS EASY!

My favorite miracle oil for noisy lifters is transmission fluid. I had an old nissan maxima years ago that had a bad case of bad lifters due to the previous owner never changing the oil.
I drained all the oil and filled it up with trans fluid. After 30-40 minutes it sounded like a brand new engine.

I bought a 93 Gl1500 2 years ago , had the same issue. Thought I bought a piece of junk! But I took a look at the exhaust and found on the front right on the exhaust manifold 2 of the nuts were missing ! So when the bike warmed up it sounded like a ticking noise. Went and bought 2 new nuts from lowes, installed them and tightened the others that were loose as well and problem solved. Purssssse like a kitten! Hope this helps .
