Whats wrong with my cruise control?

Post by NOVAwing » Wed Aug 15, 2018 7:50 pm

Hi fellow wingers,

So now that all my major repairs are done, for now. /crossesfingers

Its time to address the non working cruise control.

The 1 cruise light does cycle with the key ignition.

Nothing else works.

It does not light up or set no matter what I do.

Everything else on the bike seems to work fine.
Brake lights, side stand shut off in gear, alternator, neutral light, clock, radio etc.

I have read some threads but to be honest im confused. I am also lazy and tired from all the work I have already done lol.

Can someone who has gone through this share a step by step of what to check, and known issues to look for please?

I just don't even know where to begin, I guess fuses and relays but which ones and where?

This bike has a lot of wireing lol.

Why did I get a project bike in the summer lol. It would be much easier to work outside if it was fall......but less riding season, tradeoffs........

Anyways, rambling.

Thanks for any help,

NOVAwing

Did you clean the switches yet? When my cruise wouldnt work, it ended up being the speedometer cable. It was bouncing around too much to hold a steady speed for the CC and it would kick right off.

Does the "cruise on" light come on and go off when you cycle the push button switch? If not, I'd start there.

Thank you for the ideas guys.

I have not cleaned any switches yet. Is that really a possible cause of it not working at all?

When I turn on the ignition and all the dash lights cycle for system check, the cruise on light also cycles.

I also just replaced my speedo cable a few weeks back, works fine now.

Other then that, when I try to use the cruise nothing happens. No lights come on, the cruise does not work at all.

Thanks,

Things that keep it off are the brake levers foot and hand, clutch lever and the cruise switch if any of these are not returning to full open it won't set. try pushing the levers out. Also only works in 4th and 5th(I think maybe third???) gear at speeds above 45???

The "cruise on" light has to be on before you can set the cruise. Then the "cruise set" light will come on. I understand that the cruise on lights briefly when turning on the key. But are you able to get it on by pushing the switch after that? If not, you'll never be able to set the cruise

This may sound weird, but check your brake light bulbs. When I replaced the fixtures on the saddlebags, they came with bulbs in them. It took me two weeks to figure out the bulb was incorrect and bridging both contacts in the receptacle causing the cruise control to think the brakes were on.

When I bought the 1500 the CC wouldn't work. "Cruise ON" light wouldn't come on except during bulb check. It took about 30 mins with alternately spraying contact cleaner into the "Cruise on" switch button then working the switch on-off-on-off until I finally got the light to come on.

The nice thing was everything else in the system worked just fine, the "Cruise On" switch was the only issue. I just leave the switch "Always On".

Cruise won't set unless you are over 30 MPH in 4th or 5th gear. Won't set a speed higher than 50 MPH in 4th gear or 80 MPH in 5th, this by design. There's workarounds to get it to set speeds higher than 80 MPH, but "why?"......
