Question about legal windshields in Va

Post by NOVAwing »

11th hour question....

So Im about to order a new windshield. Mines all scratched up and I need a vent bad, backpressure is awful, my neck hurts lol.

Is the Memphis Shades blue windshield legal in Virginia?

Ive looked at the law, and lawyer blogs, and I see its not required to have one, as long as you have goggles or a faceshield, but nothing mentions colors or tint at all.

Anyone else in Va know the deal?

This windshield is non-returnable, I cant order the wrong one.

Thanks,

I don't think those tints are very dark so you should be ok. Why don't you PM CrystalPistol and ask him if he knows. He is familiar with the laws in VA.

I do not see any problems with it. The top of the shield is clear, the bottoms has the tint. You are looking through the clear section. The bottom tint is not in your field of vision for seeing the road.

Shouldn't be any issue, the tint is only on the bottom, as has been said already, and hell, looking at the pic, the tint really doesn't look like it comes much above the dash.

Thanks guys,

Yea it doesn't seem like it would be an issue, but you never know in the Commonwealth

I just don't wanna buy this thing then get tickets or fail inspection.
It is non-refundable unless defective, so that's my main issue.

Don't want be stuck with a $180 windshield I can't use lol.

Thanks everyone!

it is too bad that Madstad has dropped the 1500 from their line of really great windshields.

I have one now on my 1800 and it is the best thing that I have done in the way of windshields.
rode behind nearly all of the different makes, and Madstad, for me, is the best of them all.

you can create your own windstream, or just make it go away,
make the windshield high enough to look through it,
or lower it 4 inches or more below you eyeline.

I now have mine at the bottom, and can change the angle of the front shield to make the air stream go above my head, or full into my face.

might give them a call and see if they will make you one. all of their products are custom made to order anyway.

Thanks AZ,

Based on my research and advice here, I went ahead and ordered the Memphis Shades Blue gradient with Vent.

I looked at the multi piece windshields, not my style brother, but thanks for the recommendation.

I miss the +4 Givi windshield I had on my Suzuki Burgman 650.
Added Vietnam era chopper round vents to it, it was sweet.

Givi don't make shields for Wings it seems, or not ones this old anyway.

Thanks.

I doubt seriously that you'll have any issues. PM sent with more.

Here is a page on the inspection manual which governs inspectors: https://law.lis.virginia.gov/admincode/ ... ection410/

I have never had issue with a vent, as long as it's below line of vision. They do greatly reduce turbulence and fogging at times.

From what I recall, the MS tinting fades to near clear at top, just tinted darker at lower half.
…. and vents are below your sight line.

I have vents on both mine, they so reduce turbulence and cool morning fogging.

As long as near clear in sight line, shouldn't raise much question. If there is a issue or question raised, it'll be that. I see you ordered already, good luck!

Is this it below? If so, I wouldn't worry.

Keep your existing shied in the garage and you can bolt it on if some small minded person fails your inspection.

LOL … while I think it'll pass with little notice, if an inspector mechanic looks close, likely he / she won't find a SAE or DOT approval …
