Fairing pocket

Post by tnt9339 » Sun Oct 21, 2018 6:17 pm

Hi all,
Trying to repair a cracked fairing pocket. I thought it was ABS like the body panels, but it is not. ABS cement peels off like masking tape. Anybody know what type of plastic they are made from?

Thanks, Tony

Do you mean the inside part that isn't visible unless you remove the cover?? Its a plastic, , but I never tried the ABS cement on it.

Have you considered getting a soldering gun and using the FLAT SPADE tip that usually comes with them, (or buy one at any home depot for about $5), and "melt/blend" the crack together from the outside, , , let it cool, , ,then do the same to the inside. , ,OR , , , melt some plastic letting it drip onto the crack and then QUICKLY blend it into the crack with a trowel/spade tool.

Yes, it's the pocket itself. I would like to use the proper glue if possible.

I also need to know what type of plastic it is because I want to paint the portion outside the sealing lip. I will need to use the proper plastic primer/adhesion promoter.

I also have another one that has two holes on the inside that the PO hacked out for some nasty wiring. I may use that one with a patch panel if I can source tyhe correct glue.

Thanks, Tony

Ahhh, , ,OK, , I didn't know the crack was "exposed". I thought it would be hidden under the fairing. I'll look through some you-tube stuff, ABS/Plastic glue stuff and see if we can identify what that plastic is. I'll post when I find something.

UPDATE: Try "All purpose Cement" by Oatley, , for PVC, CPVC, ABS. Any hardware store would have it. (YouTube vids seem to show this works well) Good luck
