Overdrive light indicator

Post by RodneyH » Thu Oct 25, 2018 11:36 pm

Recently the OD indicator light is only working intermittently. When I shift to 5th gear sometimes it doesn't light up until I've ridden several miles and then it goes off and then back on again. It's no trouble at all for me to pull in the clutch and push the shift lever up to be sure I'm in 5th gear as long as it's something as simple as a bulb that's about to burn out or a loose connection but I was curious if this could be a sign of a more serious issue. My bike is a 1999 GL1500 that I bought used and without an owners manual. One more thing, is there a switch anywhere that will make the dash panel lights any brighter? At night it's difficult to see my instrument panel it's so dim. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I'd bet a faulty bulb or poor contact on the bulb is all that is wrong with the OD light.
You most likely need to replace all the dash lights though. I don't know how many miles you have on the bike but if the dash is difficult to see at night, it is most likely due to burnt out bulbs. They can be replaced with LED's. There is info in the DIY section for the GL1500 oh what you need and pretty much a step by step procedure. viewtopic.php?f=14&t=10998

Can you set the cruise control when this issue occurs?

I haven't tried to set the cruise since I noticed the problem. Since this season's pretty much over (for me anyhow) I'll check into getting led lights put in the entire dash panel at the beginning of next summer. Thank you both for your help!!

You kind of left me hanging with that question Erdeniz. What type if malfunction are you thinking of when you ask if the cruise control can be set?

The cruise control will only allow you to set it if the transmission is in 4th or 5th gear. If the transmission is in 5th gear, the OD light isn't on, and you can still set the cruise control, then you know the problem is with the OD light itself.

If the transmission is in 5th gear and you can NOT set the cruise control, then you know there is an issue with either the gear position switch, or a wire/connector somewhere between the gear position switch and the ECU and OD light.

Yes, I realize that the Cruise will only work in 4th and 5th gear. But I guess I need to do some in-depth reading of the text about the source of the light triggers. Looking at the wiring diagrams in the service manual males it look as though the ground for the OD light, as well as the N light both come from the gear position switch. Of course, there is an input to the ECM for 4th and 5th gear but it sure looks like the lights are controlled by the switch and not the ECM. What am I missing?

As WingAdmin explained we should eliminate some possibilities when troubleshooting.

If we can set the cruise control in 5th gear we will understand that the culprit is on the light bulb side, either the bulb or wiring, connector etc. should be checked using the circuit diagram.

Also, the gear position sensor can be checked by using its terminals in the C59 connector above the right fan using a multimeter. We should have ground at the terminal that we shift the gear.

That is all very good information. And I agree 100%. But the first order of business, for me anyway, would to be reach up under the dash, pull out the light socket and replace the bulb. If that does not satisfy the issue, then it is time for a little more in-depth search.

The OD light is controlled by the switch, not the ECM, you are correct.

The gear position switch has all connections going to the ECU. However, 4th and 5th gear also go to the cruise control, and 5th gear also goes to the OD light:

Gear Position Switch
Gear Position Switch

At this point we know the OD light isn't working. We don't know if the problem is the light or the switch (or something else in between).

So a simple way to determine whether or not the problem is in the switch is to look at something else we know the switch controls: the cruise control.

If the cruise control is working when the bike is in 5th gear, then we KNOW for certain that the switch is working, and that the problem is the OD light itself.

If the cruise control does not work when the bike is in 5th gear, then it is reasonable to surmise that the 5th gear switch, or wire between the switch and the ECU/cruise/OD light is broken.

If the cruise control does not work when the bike is in 4th OR 5th gear, then it is reasonable to surmise that the switch itself is broken, or perhaps C59 (located in the right side of the fairing, behind the side marker light) has become disconnected.

I'm curious, what was the outcome RodneyH? What was the malfunction and how did you get it taken care of?
