CB Antenna / flag pole question

Post by TourNut » Sat Nov 03, 2018 8:49 pm

Has anybody that put on one of those U.S. flag , clamp-on chrome poles to their CB radio antenna ? Does it mess up the SWR tune of the antenna ?

It will most certainly affect the tuning if it is either taller than the antenna itself or is near the center loading coil. I suspect if the added metal were on the lower part of the antenna and at least a couple inches from the loading coil the effect would be minimal, but you'd need an SWR bridge meter to confirm that.

Why not attach just the flag to the antenna mast itself and skip the chrome? That shouldn't bother the tuning at all. Or you could put it on the FM antenna instead....

First, interesting question. I sold, installed and tuned CB's as a hobby for a while. Set the SWR on many Wings. None ever had a flag mount attached any where on the antenna.
Secondly, unless it is a mount that attaches to the base of the antenna, the part that has the fold over hinge, I have read quite a few threads, over the years, of broken/lost antenna mast from the extra force caused by the wind. Just something to consider.
If you do mount the flag, would be very interested in what the SWR reading are before and after. thanks

Just so you know. When displaying the American on a motorcycle. Informational purposes only.
