LED break light PWM hookup ???

Post by Stantheman55 »

Happy Holidays to all on the Forum,
I have started the Led conversion process to my 2000 -1500 SE. as found in the How to articles published in the 1500 project line up. So far I have done the two side trunk lights and am very pleased with the results of the end product. I have 4 strips of lights 18 per strip for a total of 72 led's mounted on x-ray film that just lay in the tray leaving the bezel in place which makes a great diffuse for the spreading of the light pattern.

Ok I have two (2) questions

Question 1. Is there any specific place in the harness to tie into the +12v brake line or just any brake line that goes hot (+12V) when the breaks are applied ? the other +12v i am assuming (I know a bad thing to do) comes from the running lights +12v line. if not tell me now.

Question 2. I have no wiring schismatic so I can't trace it out. are the running lights for the front half of the bike on the same circuit as the rear and so once the PWM is installed it will pulse the running lights at the front end as well.

Once again I want to comment on what a great bunch of knowledgeable people we collectively have on this site and I very much enjoy the help and camaraderie I find here.

Thank you for taking the time to read and answer my questions.

Merry Christmas to all.

Stan and Jane
Two Happy Wingers.

go up to the atop of any page on this site and click on manuals.
Click your bike and you should find the electrical schematics.

Here's how I did mine: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=24194

As you can see, the single set of LEDs is powered by the running light circuit which goes through the adjustable PWM module I designed and built.

The brake light circuit connects to the output of the PWM module (and is prevented from backfeeding the module by the diode on the output). So when the brakes are off, the PWM powers the LEDs at whatever brightness it is set to. When you hit the brakes, the LEDs are given full power with no modulation, so they appear at full brightness.

Thank you for your response, I get it now,
As a last minute thought/question you gave an example of the type of Polarized Caps you used and I opened the link to the Mouser Company.

I'm guessing you get parts from them at your work site. Will they sell to individuals like me or only to big companies.

Or is there another supply house to order from that you would recommend. Mouser seems reasonable with their prices giving you the price for just one component. I don't know if they have a minimum order requirement or what they charge for shipping.
Looking forward to building the PWM.
Thanks Stan.

I use several different suppliers, but Mouser and Digikey are two of the main ones. Both of them will sell down to a single component if you like, but you get significant discounts for buying in quantity, which I normally do. Shipping is normally dependent on the size and weight of your total order, and is normally calculated when the order gets packed for shipping.

Thanks again for your reply, I don't see my self buying in bulk as I am not in the electronics field but good to know I can buy small quantities if need be. Am also looking forward to some of the other mods you have posted such as replacing the lights in my handle bar controls, I never really paid attention to the fact that I have only one lit control and all the others are out something to add on the future projects list.
Once again thanks for all your assistance.
Stan.

This will allow brakes and running lights to your strips.

This sure seems like a very simple foolproof way to do the dual function LED's.

Does anyone here have it installed?
