My 2000 Valkrie Interstate 1500 (just crossed 100k miles and still runs great) just started a "bearing" like whine
at 1.5k to 2.5k rpm. it sounds like its coming from the front right side of the bike while riding. There is no decrease
in performance or other motor noise I can hear.
Would I be on the right track to start by looking at the alternator bearings?
What else should I look at?
I have not used a stethoscope yet so I could be way off on location of the noise.
If its the alternator, am I riding on "borrowed time"? (so to speak)
"bearing" type whine at 1.5-2.5 rpm

Have you ever changed the timing belts?
My first guess is a bearing going bad in a belt tension pulley.
If your Val is like other Goldwings, the alternator is on
the left rear of the engine.

I have checked. Had the cover off and removed the belt tension enough to check for play in the idlers. Couldn't feel any. Still could be the issue
though and I just couldn't move them by hand.

Too tight belt(s) will sing, too loose will flap like.

Could you record the noise and share it?

I think my issue is indeed the idler pulley on the right side.
Can I use idlers from a 1988 GL 1500 and will they bolt up without any changes?

According to partzilla catalog, all years of GL1500 including Valkyries, even GL1200 have the same part number.
