Gl 1500 reversing problem

Post by jezza » Wed Mar 06, 2019 5:41 am

Hi guys, hopefully someone can help me. The reverse on my 1995 se has stopped working. With the engine running and side stand up, when I pull the reverse lever up, the neutral light goes off and the reverse light comes on, when I press the starter button it turns over but I don't back up. The cables are correctly adjusted. The starter motor doesn't continually turn over but sort of pulses. It works perfectly when used to start the engine and the bike runs and rides beautifully. It has a new battery and it fully charged. I have been reading all the forum discussions about reverse problems but none seem to have the same problem as mine. If anyone has any ideas I would be very grateful.

As in when you push the starter button to reverse and it starts to move backwards a tiny bit then immediately stops moving?

Have you replaced the starter recently??? How fast the does the starter motor pulse??? Almost sounds like a broken starter gear if your not feeling any movement at all which is why I asked if you replaced the starter motor as it is easy to break the gear when installing a new starter...

Do you have a Honda Shop Manual??? Have you gone thru the troubleshooting diagnostics listed in the manual???

Hi thanks for responding, no I haven't changed the starter, it works perfectly. I do have a honda manual and have checked the diagnosics.
None of the posts in the forum describe my problem either. Any ideas would be very welcome.

I would have thought the diagnostics would have revealed something... I read about a fellow having problems with his reverse and it was traced to a bad connection of a plug under the truck box... Have you checked all your connections to make sure they are sound... It's been a while since I had my 1500 so my recollection of troubleshooting it is a bit vague...

If you put the bike on the center stand is it any different???

Les

When the bike is on centre stand it makes no difference. The only thing that I have done to the bike recently is change the alternator.

It sounds like even though your light is coming on that it's not completely engaging. I had some weird issues with mine a while back
the reverse light wouldn't come on but it worked fine, but then it just stopped working for a bit. I checked my cables and all the other stuff
I found that if I gently rocked the bike as I was pulling the lever for reverse it would engage and work again. then after doing some work that I figured couln't have been related it started working properly again, the light would come on as it should and reverse worked as it should and has every since. I'm still not sure what I did so I'm not sure this will help much, but try rocking it forward and back gently as you pull the lever and see if it engages

When you pull the lever up, do you first pull out to release the lock pin, then up and then back in when at the 12 o'clock position?

Yes I definitely pull the lever out first, it's worked for the last 5 years perfectly.
I will try and post a video, that's a good idea.
Thanks

Also, try holding it shy of 12 o'clock and push the start button. If it works you top switch behind the lever needs replacement or you have a bad ground.
There are 2 main gound blocks in the harness, at knee area, under the shelter, against the frame, wrapped in tape in the harness, orange connectors, 1 on each side of the bike. I've found burnt connectors on several 1500 at that point. Honda used too small a wire guage imo and the connector gets dirty even though wrapped and dirty connection causes heat and burns the pins.
