CB Harness on GL 1500

Post by cardinal »

My cb first started making me sound like I was talking in a tunnel, then started breaking up, then quit transmitting my voice completely. Just a muffled hum. I sent it off to Sierra for repairs and was told there is nothing wrong with the radio. After talking with him and determining that it was not a microphone problem, he said it could be a problem with the wiring harness or maybe the antenna. The front and rear harnesses are the same, so if the intercom works with the mike attached to the passenger radio outlet, then I can just swap the rear harness for the front one.
I can't find any articles here that show how to get either harness out. Hope one exists and some one can point me to it. I will get the radio back on April 24 and am leaving for a trip to Arizona 11 days later.
Any advise would be appreciated.

Are you saying the mic will work on the passenger connector but not on the rider connector? You can pull the left storage compartment out and you will see where that plug, that you hook your headset to, goes on the bike. You will have to remove the seat go get to see where the passenger connector is plugged in.

Before you go too far, pull the am/fm radio and the 2 side shelters to check the main ground distribution blocks, orange color, in the harness on both sides near your knees. They are wrapped in tape so peel back the tape to get the caps off to check for burnt pins in them. If burnt pins, make jumpers around the connector. Unfortunately Honda decided to use 22 guage wire for the grounds. I've found several burnt pins over the past 5 years.
Left side and right side location.

No, I was told that if I could be heard from the passenger intercom to the riders intercom, but not be heard transmitting from the riders position to the passenger....then the harness was bad.
Any radio I attach my mike to will transmit voice. Any mike attached to my bike will not transmit, but my radio is working properly.

Try a jumper from the battery ground to the cb frame and the trunk cb antenna ground strap as a test.

I'll get the radio back on Wednesday and give this a try.
Thanks
