Post by RBGERSON »

I rebuilt my front calipers, new pads ets. but now I can't get the front covers back on..It seems the lower tab on the cover has no space to slide into it's spot..any tricks, ideas????

Forgive me for not following , , , are you speaking of the front "rotor" covers, , , or do you really mean "fender covers"?? In my experience, that front fender does NOT need to be removed for caliper rebuilds or new pads. The rotor covers bolt to a metal triangular shaped bracket that can easily get bent out of alignment.

The rotor cover brackets can even be bolted down out of alignment by about 1\4 inch. But I suspect you are referring to the actual fender side covers.???

Yep not rotor cover; those little covers that fit on the back side of the front fender that fit over teh brake lines. You have to remove them to get the rotor covers off as then is bolt under them.

You bent the cover supports out of alignments, the little bracket where the bottom 2 bolts attach. Straighten them up and you should be fine

OK, , I got it now, , ,I've had that problem too, ,

In my case, it was a matter of a spacer on the upper rotor cover being accidentally placed under the brake bracket IIRC. Double check that rotor cover to make sure that it goes against the forks first, then put the bracket on. That will give the needed space for the curved tab of the fender cover to fit in the correct place.

EDIT: Sorry for my poor description, , ,I should have said the "brake hose grommet bracket". The IIRC is "If I recall correctly"

what's "brake bracket IIRC"
don't think I bent the lower brackets,
the rotor cover is up against the forks very tight

It's more like the rotor cover needs to go up or forward to make space for the tab..but it can't go up as the top rotor bolt prevents that. If i move the lower brackets forward a bit that may work but I am not sure those bracket will move???

Make sure that rotor cover is installed with all the parts in the right place.

Items 6 and 8 and 7 and 9 need to be mated together and bolted in place on the outside of the covers.
I've made the mistake of inserting the bolts with those parts under the cover before but it was pretty clear that it was wrong.
That would make it difficult to install the fender filler.

Fender fillers #5 and 7 would be really difficult to install if those clips were not in the right place.

I have done the same as MikeB said. I didn't get the rotor cover up against the fork first. It has to be under the items 7 and 9 or that cover won't go in place right. Make sure you have the rotor cover in place correctly.
