Mystery Vent????

Post by canal mark »

I was on my back cleaning my GL1500 and I noticed a little triangular shaped door open. I pushed on the door and it appears to be spring loaded with no way to keep it closed. The door is on the metal part of the bike at the bottom in front of the foot pegs. Right below the head. Does anyone know what this door is for?

It is a air vent, to open and close it turn the black knob by the right front speaker.

Toe warmer gets hot air from the header pipes to help warm your toes when it gets really cold out. Adjust, open/close with the knob on the right side of the dash (opposite of the headlight adjuster). Only on SE model.

I also have an SE and thought those things were a gimmick. Then I went for a ride on a cold day with them open and found out those little things really work. I was shocked.

Yes, they do. You can feel the heat from them unlike the ones near your knees. I can't really tell any difference when the ones up higher are set to heat or cool.

Use a flashlight and look into the vent whilst moving lever
Could be mis-assembled where lever isn't flipping the door
Or the seals on the door are just shot from age

Well, that is a good guess but not correct. The little flap is in position and works when you move the lever. There is just not enough difference in the heat output no matter where it is set. It is just not effective at causing the rider to get enough heat to matter.
