I got behind a gravel dump...doing just that dumping gravel behind him...so I booted my machine (94,000 miles--awesome bike) to higher RPMS than I even ran it...after the pass it just basically lost power. I was able to maintain running but it must have been running off of the battery----Ran ok at low thorttle...so I limped home. Shut it off...then no start.
I have a built in voltage meter that dropped off the cliff when I tried to start it (as it woiuld with the started engaged...but all I got was a click at the relay in the relay box and no voltage at what I assume it the starter relay to the front of the battery and just below it a bit. I checked EVERY relay that I knew about, they all benched ok. Checked each fuse...all good. Checked the battery fuses at the battery...all good. At a loss at the moment---this is one of the best forums going...any help would be...helpful AND APPRECIATED! Every thing is off the bike just about and willing to do anything cuz trailering this rig is...you know..any pics you need? I'll get em posted...THANKS!!

If you put a voltmeter right across the battery terminals, what does it read when the bike is off, when the ignition is turned on, and when you press the starter button?eusurp wrote: ↑Mon May 20, 2019 11:40 amI got behind a gravel dump...doing just that dumping gravel behind him...so I booted my machine (94,000 miles--awesome bike) to higher RPMS than I even ran it...after the pass it just basically lost power. Yes all that testing and no battery load test? That's the first test ("volt meter dropped off the cliff") and battery at off readings, if and what alternator reading is putting out at battery, idle and 2,500 rpms.

At the battery with a digital VoltMeter battery was 12.4 something and when I hit the starter switch, lights went off and volts dropped to below 9.5...surprised me and the relay clicked AT THE RELAY BOX. I took out all the plugs dropped it into 1st gear and pushed the bike to make sure I didn't seize the motor...this is a 93 Aspencade BTW..awesome rig...hope I didn't over rev the thing...it just happened...I disconnected ALL of my side lights/fog lights in case of any grounding conflicts...probably as waste of time...
thanks for looking...scratching my head...but I owned a 81 1000 Goldwing maybe it was a '79...and I brought it to the shop for a high beam switch issue and it sat there for 6 weeks, they didn't fix it and charged me---more like TRIED to charge me $450....the guy said my guys aren't that good at troubleshooting...I told him I wasn't that good at finding a good repair shop...fixing myself is the better solution with y'alls help...this is an amazing information center!
Alternator was pushing out 13.5 volts with most peripherals off and dropped when I turned on the side lights etc....fog lights dropped it to just below 12 so never had them all on at once. When I lost power on Sat had no other lights on at all...

Do a load test on the battery. That drop you mentioned of 12.4 to 9.5 is indicative of an internal short in the battery.
(Your adding in the bit on the other bike makes for confusing facts. )
What is the alternator putting out on this bike?

Agreed. Anything below 11 volts indicates either a problem with the battery, or a serious problem with the starter. My money would be on the battery.
