Kick stand

Post by dbenson » Thu May 30, 2019 9:05 pm

I have a 93 GL 1500 SE, when I put it into gear the motor shuts off. I think its the kickstand switch but it does not do it when the center stand is down. Any thoughts.

Side stand has a safety switch which kills the engine when it is down if the bike is in gear.
But the centerstand does not have such a safety switch.

Yep, Erdeniz nailed it, , , on the 1500's the engine running AND in gear has a safety feature that when the kick stand is "down" the engine dies. Works great when pulling to a stop and you need to bail off in a hurry, kick the stand down as you stop, and set it on the stand, in gear its not gonna move. The "flip" side of this is mounting the bike, key on in neutral, bring the bike upright and forget to kick the kick-stand up, push start button then put in gear to "take-off", , , OOPS engine dies (embarrassing!!).

So I took the switch off and sprayed some cleaner in it. the indicator light goes on and off on the instrument panel but I have the same problem. I am worried of a deeper issue.

Also on that the bike does not start when I pull in the clutch lever. On my 82 if it was in gear I could pull in the clutch lever and it would start. Not sure if I have a deeper issue or just new to the 1500 and learning how it operates.

If the kick stand is down and the bike is in gear, the engine will not run or start no matter what.

If the kick stand is up and the bike is in gear, you must pull the clutch lever in to start.

If the bike is in neutral, it will start whether or not the kick stand is down.

There are 2 contacts of the switch as shown in the diagram below.
One goes to the light and the other goes to ECU. Remove C28 connector and check its operation with a multimeter.

Sorry its been busy here, I found some connectors not attached at the upper clutch switch, when I attached them I found that the bike tries to start when in gear and the clutch is pulled in. but it pulls forward during this process.

Your clutch when pulled in is not fully disengaging if motorcycle starts and acts normal when in neutral. Check fluid level in reservoir for clutch master then bleed, check clutch lever for wear along with bushing-pushrod for wear.

Thank you did a good bleed on it. And got to ride it today for the first time since I Bought it. This forum has helped me take this bike from not running to running. Thank you. One system at a time though, now my back brakes are not working so I will start getting into that.
