Rear wheel in wrong place

Hi everyone,
Just wondering if i can pick your brains ref an issue i have with my 98 wing rear wheel placement,
I have just replaced my wheel bearings and when re/fitting the wheel have found that when the axle is torqued to 80ftlbs the disc is hard up against the caliper bracket and wheel will not turn.
If i remove the washer and place it between the caliper bracket and spacer(ie on other side of bracket)then disc and caliper and wheel all come up with perfect alighnment, do you think i have put bearings on wrong side of the hub when fitted and if i have would it move the wheel over. Cheers dave

Are you sure you didn't loose track of the spacers, I had the same problem with my front wheel and it was I put the spacers on the wrong side

Hi sorrels,thanks for the quick reply!
No dont think so,ive checked it over and over and its been done to the manual,this is the order that I've used.left to right axel goes through swing arm,washer,caliper bracket,spacer,wheel hub,drive hub,and out to the nut.
Ive also checked the wheel bearings and I've put them in the correct side,wish i had taken a photo before eh'

I just looked on Utube and the rear wheel axle install on a 1500 is there maybe that will help

Hi, ive been through most of the utube vids and only found one that had the washer on the wheel side of the caliper bracket, think i might talk to honda at the dealership here tommorrow,thank heaps for your input.

Tell me what happened I am interested I've had things like this happen more than once but I am stubborn I won't ask anyone. I have a Harley that kept shutting off on the road it took a month but I found a plug that was not pushed in all the way.

It started when i removed the rear wheel to replace the disc,and overhaul the caliper,
The wheel bearings were replaced aswell, when i put the wheel back on the bike, i found that when the axle was torqued up the disc was rubbibg on the caliper bracket,i have followed the service manual exactly,the manual states that the washer should be on the left side of the caliper bracket however the only way that it all works is if the washer is placed on the other side of the bracket.
Wish that I'd taken a photo before i removed the wheel.
Think that i will leave the washer on the right side and check wheel alighnment, if its in line with the front wheel then I'll run it like that.

That's great Dave, you figured it out. I'm 67 years old my first bike was an 56 Ariel between now and then I've had BSA's Honda's several different Harley's but my 2008 G.W. I love most of all my wife does to. It's a little heavy at slow speed but soo much fun on the road.

Did you get the thrust washer between the drive flange and the wheel on the right side in the right place?

Hi dave 0430, yep washer is on the left of the caliper bracket, however i will be putting in a 3mm washer on the other side to get clearance for the disc, just had a chat with the honda dealer, and they said that they recently had a bike in with the same problem, it was found that the disc he fitted was aftermarket,and was not offset like the original my original disc was offset by you guessed it 3mm same thickness as the washer on the axle.
So i was correct in transfering the washer to the other side of bracket so the caliper bracket hasthe clearance and everything lines up.
I will be putting in a washer on both sides of the bracket now,it will not change the wheel alighnment because it is on the left of the wheel hub,and the bike takes its alighnment from the swingarm on the drive side.
Very happy to finally understand why its happened. Cheers guys thanks for your input. Dave

Im 62,had a few bikes over the years but stopped riding when the kids arrived,started with an old bsa bantam,T200 suzuki,(bit rare now), then a z400 kawasaki, 350 yamaha,Z1R kwaka then believe it a cd90 honda stepthrough posty bike. Now a 98 wing 1500(best of the lot) by far.all the best to you,dave

Oh sorry wrong part, yes the washer is in there but not sure if it does more than insulate the vibration from the drive,
Its very thin, however wheel is back in,and all good now.
