89 Cruise problem

Post by joeincalif » Sun Jun 02, 2019 6:57 pm

Looking at an 89 wing. The seller said everything works BUT the cruise does not engage. He said the lights come on but the cruise does not set. I haven't actually seen the bike yet but just wondering what could cause that problem. It has stock levers so that isn't it. The bike is about 75 miles from me so I just wanted to get some information on what it might be before I go look at it.He is asking $3100.
here is the bike and the description

new tires with balancing beads new brakes' pads and rear rotor all new filters and oil changed. new gates timing belts. new spark plugs, plus shop manual phone calls only please show contact info Ted $3100. New custom seat shown comes with both sets of seat and drivers backrest.
. Thanks again.

It can be a very easy or a very complicated problem. Most probably one of the 3 safety switches connected in series may be the culprit. Or one of the other inputs listed below is missing, or one of the components in the cruise control system is bad. Also if a LED bulb is used as the tail/brake light bulb it can cause this problem.
So, you will really need to troubleshoot to find the problem.

I just fixed this issue on my bike: the Cruise on light would light up when I hit that switch; the Cruise Set would light up when I hit THAT switch; each of the cancel switches would properly turn the Cruise Set light off; the only thing that wouldn't work was the cruise itself - it would not grab the throttle. Turned out to be a crimped vacuum line: the line from the vacuum accumulator to the cruise control valve was crimped in the air cleaner mount. After moving the vacuum line away from the bolt holding the air cleaner everything works again!

Check for a worn clutch lever bushing. Inexpensive part from Honda dealer. Common issue and, when worn, will not return the clutch lever fully to set the cruise/clutch switch.

Anything that prevents the cruise from setting should also prevent the Set light from lighting up...

I have a 2000 GL1500 SE my cruise light comes on when the cruise is turned on but the cruise doesn't activate when I reach the speed I want and try to lock it in. This was until I would lift on the right foot brake petal with my foot, then it would engage. I wanted the brake petal higher above the foot rest so I took the petal bracket off the spline and re-installed it. Now my cruise doesn't engage at all even with lifting the petal. I'm positive that the cruise activation switch on the foot petal is out of adjustment knowing that the cruise worked before when lifting on the petal. Since I had to lift on the petal to activate the cruise it was slightly out of adjustment, since I moved the brake petal higher I cannot get it to engage at all, so it must be completely out of adjustment. Here's a good video off You-Tube that shows how to adjust this cruise activation switch. I love my bike and being able to do the maintenance myself, this web site has been a huge help.
