tech talk

Post by sarge1952 » Wed Jul 03, 2019 4:12 pm

Hello All and thanks for allowing me into the group.

I recently;y bought my 1992 GL 1500 and the previous owner put a real jaky foot board heel toe shifter on the bike and for my size 12 it just wouldn't allow me to shift the bike properly. So after much searching on E-Bay I finally found the OEM replacement now my problem is i HAVE NEVER replaced anything like this . On my previous wing I changed the oil pump and several other parts but not the entire shifter assembly , so any help here would be nice as wife is getting tired of the bike taking up floor space in the garage

It is a pretty simple job to remove the heel/toe monkey motion and put the oem shifter arm back on. You will need the original foot pegs also if you don't already have them. You just take all the floor boards and shifter arms, etc off. Then you can put the shifter arm back on the shaft. Need to be careful and get the splines lined up so the shifter is in the right position. Then the other side you take off the floor board and put the foot peg back in place. The foot brake pedal is likely different than the original but it will work ok with the foot pegs, at least mine did.

You have the shifter extension piece (2), but I don't see the actual shifter (1).

It also depends on what parts were changed for the heel/toe shifter that you have.

Have a look at this article for installing a shifter brace. It has great photos of the stock shifter arrangement.

Yes, that is an old article. The new ones have the bolt reversed.

Nothing in that picture of parts will be of much value unless you just want spares. The actual OEM shift lever is an aluminum forging and if your 1500 has floor boards, likely that is of no use to you either. You'll need OEM pegs to go with the OEM shift lever if you intend to upshift with toes.

Not saying it can't be done, because I and others have, but requires some fabrication, welding, etc. I wear 9-1/2s and it can get tight. I have AddOn lowboy floorboards, and my own toe shift that is adjustable, and heel rest for use when shifting as needed.

"pivot piece"? You mean shifter brace thingy?

OEM had only pegs and Alloy toe shift lever.

Glad you got her figured out.
