Oil Light No Longer Comes On

Post by StrongEagle »

Bike runs OK. But when turning the key, no more light. Is this the dash light that is burned out? Sending unit? Since the dash light looks like a bear to get to, is it possible to easily check the sending unit, or is that a lot of plastic as well?

TIA

I don't think there's a "bulb check" function on the oil light as it should be on anyway until the engine starts.

Oil sending unit is on the side of the engine block right by the dipstick. If you ground the wire going to the sending unit and the bulb comes on, sending unit is bad. If still no light, it's the bulb.

The reverse control unit uses the same oil pressure input coming from the oil pressure sensor.
So you may check the reverse system functions or not, to get a better idea about the problem.
Here is the wiring diagram.

Erdeniz, I don't know how much help that would be, a bad oil sender would simply indicate to the reverse circuit that the engine was running.... unless reverse was working with the engine stalled...

KISS;

keyon, oil light should burn. ( oil pressure is zero, right? )

if it don't, then temporarily jumper the oil pressure switch to ground.
light burns? switch bad ( rare )
light does not burn, bulb is bad.

DenverWinger, thank you. Exactly what I was looking for. Sure sounds like a bulb. And sounds like it is about time for that LED dash conversion.

DenverWinger and Erdeniz Umman: Good to know that reverse control also uses oil pressure input. Since my reverse works (and I use it regularly), at least I know I have oil pressure... although, short of no oil in the crankcase, or horror show stories of getting stuff left in the engine, I am at a loss as to how you would end up with no oil pressure in a maintained engine.

As I think about this, if the reverse gear actuation also relies on an oil sending unit signal, and my reverse gear works, then I don't need to test anything... the sender works because reverse works, so it must be the light. On the right track?

Most probably the culprit is the bulb itself in this case, but also there is a small possibility of having a bad wiring after the splice shown on the diagram going to the bulb.
The connector C55 is under the right pocket, and the C66 is behind the instrument panel, if you need to check the connections.
