Saddlebag light relay?

Post by Alien51 »

I was researching why my saddle bag lights on my new-to-me 1999 GL1500SE we not working. Took off the right tail panel and this is what I found. It seems to be getting input from the running light and then the outputs are to both side of the saddlebag lights. I can verify it is getting 12v but not putting out much at all. Putting 12v to each saddlebag light does not work. Has anyone seen this setup before?

Yup, that is a kind of transformer for the saddlebag lights.
Those saddlebag lights do not use bulbs. They are a kind of electroluminescent panel
and they are known to go bad. That little transformer puts out about 100 volts if it
is working, so be careful. Since my saddlebag lights were not working anyway,
I pulled that transformer out of there. Hopefully this winter I'll get around putting
LEDs in the saddlebag lights.
If'n I was you, I'd do what I did and just remove it to reduce the draw on
the electrical system 'til you can get LEDs for the saddlebags.

Just my two cents....

Offcenter,

I really appreciate the info! I thought it might be a transformer for an EL panel, but wasn't sure and Google searches were not finding anything. I will definitely pull the transformer and go to standard LED lights.

Once again, thanks!

My 88 had those electroluminescent panels. They didn't work any more.I did replace them with red led strip lights. One down the middle for a nice marker and 2 more tied to my blinker lamp.Theres no doubt about a turn signal visibility now :)
