Reverse Question

Post by Harp »

I have a 2014 Wing, purchased new. My driveway is a slight incline going into the garage, so I turn the bike and back it in. Knees have gone bad leaving me to use reverse for about twenty feet every time I park it. Probably do this about three times a week. 1) Any Ideas on how long the starter motor will hold up? 2) When I came to the lip of the garage entrance Sunday, the bike stopped and made a sound that reminded me of when my 69 Cutlass needed a new starter drive. I let it rest for a minute and it worked without problem after that. Any ideas on longevity of that motor/Do I need to replace it now? Any insight would be appreciated.
Thank you.

My '02 will stop when reversing, as did my '94 and '98.

Don't recall just why, but it is not indicative of a starter failure.
IMO, it is a timer function... ( no proof of that )

I just release the start button, wait a few seconds and engage again to back out of my shop.
My shop has a Transom under the overhead door to keep water from running into the shop.

when the bike reaches that transom ( 2x6 ), the starter balks when trying to get over the 2x6.
I just let it sit a second, start again and it continues on.

Never once had a starter failure on any of my Goldwings.

When backing my trike sometimes it would stop or not work and make a ratchet noise. I adjusted the neutral - reverse cables and have not had the problem since although it has only been a couple of weeks since I adjusted it. I don't know how mechanically inclined you are but It's not hard to do.

Thanks all. It hasn't has a repeat. If it does, I'll have cables adjusted and keep an eye out from there. Thanks again.

My driveway is like yours, slight incline and I do the same, put it in reverse and back it in. Done this to 3 different Gold Wings and never had a problem so I don't think it is the starter, probably just a cable adjustment. Good luck with it, let us know how it works out
