According to the circuit diagrams of 88 and 89 models there are some differences at the wiring and the components used.

Red dots show the differences that I have noted.

thanks so what you are saying is an Mt2 for a 1989 is not the same as an MT2 for a 1988 fitted as part of Service bulletin 2 for the hesitation problem

For 88 models its part number is 30410-MN5-003
For 88 models the updated version is 30410-MT2-003
For 89 models its part number is 30410-MT2-013

So it seems they are different, but I am not sure if they are interchangeable or not.

On the other hand I highly doubt the current hesitation you are attempting to correct now with a 1988 service bulletin has been with that machine for over thirty years. Someone somewhere would have likely taken it to the dealer if it was there when new. Not every '88 was affected. Many other components in an engine can cause a hesitation which need to be investigated first. What diagnostic work has been done to date?

Thanks some of those Part numbers are for Ignition control units looking at the honda Parts manual , there are lots of incorrectly advertised units on Ebay , however there re 2 major indicators of them being Ignition units rather than card Units, the Ignition unit has a connection for a vacuum pipe and has a single cable to connect to earth.

from the SB2 for 1988 models replacement parts

30430-MT2-003 Carb Control Unit this should only have 3 groups of cables and 3 connectors
30410-MT2-003 Ignition Control Unit

From the honda Parts Manual

30410-MT2-013 is for a 1989 from the parts manual this probably has the 4 th cable and connector

As far as I understood from the pictures on Internet, 88 updated versions have four connectors with red, blue, white and black colors.

So, I don't know what you are trying to do but, you should either go to the Honda dealer and request for the SB2 update, or replace both ICU and the CCU at the same time, in my opinion.
Or replace the original piece with the same one.

My original question was is there a way to connect in the one with the extra lead and you have confirmed there are a few wiring differences so thank you, I do have SB2

I will try to get a second hand one with 3 leads an marked MT2, all Honda specalists say it is discontinued

Then the part number you are looking for may be 30435-MT2-003 or 30435-MT2-000 according to partzilla parts catalog. They are both listed for 88 models.
