Both Turn signal dash lights an beep

Post by vitoweimar »

When my 1988 GL 1500 is running, sometime while moving, sometimes when stopped, when what seems to be at random times, the both turn signal dash lights light up and there is a beeping sound. It does not do it all the time, just random. All the gauges are fine; temp, oil light not on, plenty of fuel. It runs and drives great, what is causing the warning? Thanks!

My 1500 never beeped except the poor OEM horn. Makes me think there is a bad ground or short, perhaps in the left handlebar switch box as it has both turn signals and horn buttons.

If it's not the horn you hear, is it possible that someone has installed a reminder signal to turn off the directional even though the bike has auto cancel?

Thank you for your reply. It is not the horn that is beeping. It sounds like a buzzer that would sound if there was some serious engine emergency (like low oil pressure or overheaat) but neither are present and both dash turn signal indicators flash.

A relay can make a buzzing sound, so that might be the noise, but not the cause. I agree that the first place to look is the switch. Be sure to use the plastic bag technique, when taking it apart.

We could use more information on this Goldwing. Do the turn signals work properly? Do the hazard lights work properly? Where does it sound like the beep is coming from? Have you added any other new gadgets lately? If there are different models of GL1500 that year, (IDK), which model is it? Interstate, Aspencade, SE? The Interstate does not have auto cancel turn indicators. It could possibly be a bad connection or ground. I would try cleaning the turn and hazard switches and check the connectors below the handlebar.

Thank you for the many great replies. As it turns out, a previous owner installed something (that I have not yet identified) with a tiny switch. When I turned it off, the buzzing and flashing stopped! It seems so many times, after-market alterations of a remarkably well designed bike do not make it better, just different and often less reliable.

This is a great group and thanks again,

Don

This could be some kind of security/alarm system, but, you would have to contact the previous owner to get the key fob remote, if that is what it is.
