Bench starting a 200 gl1500
I had no problems getting my gl1000 started with the wiring harness. Now on to the new project. I have a 2000 gl1500 motor out of a wrecked 2000. Everything was removed to the many plugs that's on the motor. There's a guy that put one in a tractor. My question might take alot to answer. I need a list of the stuff that it takes to bench run the motor. Just the things and wiring to just run the motor on my motor stand. I know this is a tall order but there is absolutely nothing on this subject on the internet. I know all with the wisdom of doing this may think it's a no brainer but I am lost. I do have access to the bike they took it out of but I have no clue on how to get there. I may want to put this in my trike. Thanks

Seems just an ECM connected to the pulse generators and a set of coils should be enough to fire the engine on a stand. You'll need to study the wiring diagrams to determine which ECM connections can be left disconnected or need to be grounded.

Re: Bench starting a 200 gl1500
Thanks Denverwinger.
So the ecm also has neutral switch and all the stuff that would keep the motor from starting I assume. ie. If it doesn't have anything plugged in default wont start. Carb control etc. I'm digging! Seen something eliminating ecm making it run like that?? I dunno. It might be to my advatage to keep the ecm, and figure out the work arounds. Say I dont plug in the air ride nothing happens.
If I use the air ride parts on the trike the ecm will then work thru the ecm. No neutral switch/ no start? Or it dosent matter if something isn't plugged in. The latter seems typical/ normal.
Keeping the advance, reverse, air control and tach. It's carbs but air adjustment is controlled?
Oil pressure going into ecm. Isnt there some kinda motor stop for that? It would take 3 gl1000 type coils.Any ideas or info would be cool

This forum is based more to helping keep an old wing running stock, rather than a focus on chopping and bobbing. There might be someone that 'might' come on and read this who 'might' have that knowledge, but, more than likely not.
As you probably know,(I don't like to assume) to make a motor run it needs fuel, air and spark.
You will need to know how to set up an electronic spark control to replace the stock ecm, which sends the signal to the coils and voltage to spark the plugs. You say you do not as you said you are lost, understandably so.
The stock gl1500 Goldwing wiring is a complex wiring system, loaded with safety switches that the ecm reads, to start and run the bike.
The switches are basically grounding loops to complete a circuit.
Can you 'work around' it? First, You'll need to be able to read and understand wiring diagrams, can you?
You are attempting to do what many have dreamed of doing, many have asked for information to do, and very few have accomplished, and fewer, if any as you have seen on the internet, fewer have documented their path.
Internet searches today garner money based results(who pays the most to the search engine) rather the actual information anyone seeking a topic, for the most part the results end up being paid advertising.
There used to be another great goldwing forum, @ 10 years ago, that had lots of information but @ 2012 it got sold out to a dot com giant, that knew nothing of motorcycles and they figured they could make lots of money buying up mc forums, do a few server changes into their server to put together in a list of motorcycles, to make "easy" internet searches, selling advertising space to vendors. But when they changed it to a their server system, it totally screwed up the old information/post searching capabilities.
You might try to contact another member I think might still be a moderator of that forum and see if he can search it memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=72
Send him a pm to ask if he can search it out.

Re: Bench starting a 200 gl1500
Thank you so much!! I understand the forum is for stock/oem primarily. I integrated two different years of jeeps this summer and it was hard, and took 2 months. I have 3 wings. 77 naked, 76 that I have done all the upgrades on, intake with a 2 barrel progressive, electronic ignition and upgraded ignition coils. Then the wrecked 2000 interstate 1500. My naked is my baby. I'm gonna do this and document it to share. A friend said find the 6 carb Valkyrie wiring harness, earlier the better. After researching the icm and what it does dont scare me. It's not a ecm so it doesn't control much. Again thank you much for the help. I have used information here many times. My trike build has been a work of love for the keeping of the style of the goldwing in a special build. The motors are awsome and dont need much to make em better if that's your desire. I'm buying up all the motors possible because there so good. I'll share here when I can and come back for the great wisdom members share. Thanks again!

Re: Bench starting a 200 gl1500
Yes the valkryie wiring is simplified compared to the wing. They are basically the same motor with hotter cams.
If you are buying wing motors, the 97-2000 have better transmissions.

Re: Bench starting a 200 gl1500
Yes true. I'm dismantling a 2000 for the motor and my friend will be selling the good parts. It just glanced a vehicle and it hit the right side radiator and crushed the frame tight to the valve cover leaving just a small scratch on the cover. Motor front belt covers didnt get touched but the radiator was crushed up to the right cover.. Saving these for different projects, stock and custom. This is what I do..thanks again
