I have located a 2000 wing with 2500 miles been in storage , what should I offer

Need a few more details. In storage - how long? Mileage - 2500 miles or 25,000 miles? The market for older Goldwings is not that strong at the present. I would offer no more than $2,500.00 to $3,000.00 remembering that motorcycles have a sentimental aspect and this one is some 20 years old. Storage time impacts getting the bike back on the road. Factor in timing belts, coolant/brake/clutch/final drive flushes, lubing rear drive shaft splines, all filters - gas/air/cruise, tires, fork oil and parts - should replace the seals/bushings/etc because of age - maybe a fork spring upgrade as well (Sonic straight rate springs - 1.1 or 1.2 at about $100.00 US), check the air compressor system works and rear shocks hold air, new brake pads all round, rebuild of clutch slave - lots of crud from water infiltration (brake fluid absorbs water quite well), take a charged battery and battery cables with you and determine if it turns over and also to check lights, etc. Have a good look at the plastics. If it has been stored for a long time, factor in a carb rebuild as well (carb rebuild would take the offer down to at least $2,500.00). Look for aftermarket add on items such as lights, wiring can be daunting to straighten out. Are you going to be doing the work or someone else? You are probably going to invest another $2,000.00 to get it back on the road, so now you have $5,000.00 into this bike. Still a good deal if it is cosmetically good. I have a '95 that I have invested some $3,000.00 CDN and more than happy with it - still doing minor maintenance and fixes (has 175,000 Kms on it and still going strong). 7,400 Km road trip two up last year and used 1/2 quart of oil, not bad at these Kms and no issues (gas and drive).

Every older bike will need maintenance/work no matter what you purchase; however, these bikes are quite manageable once the maintenance is done - oil changes, gas and go. The trick is to get the bike at the lowest possible price that you and the seller are happy with, then move forward. Good luck.

Thank you so much for your input, the bike has no alterations, the previous owner died, and his friend is selling it, for his wife. You made some very good points. He will not take that for it. He is asking 6000.00 I offered 4500.00, but will probably retract that offer. Thanks again.

In other words, bought it and parked it. Never know what will happen, the longer it is for sale, the more the price comes down.

from what you describe, in storage for 20 years?

$2,000 is my top offer, every thing on that bike will have to be gone thru, as per the good post up above.

the wife is very emotional over it, but the market place does not care, and farkles are even worse, the market place does not attribute even $1 extra to the NADA price, and that varies by location.

for the price she is asking, you can buy a 1800 between 2001 to 2008....

I bought my 2002 three years ago, with 98,000 miles, talked to the original owner ( bike at a dealership )
he rode the bike every year, he owned a m/c shop and did trike conversions.... he put in a brand new rear end on my 2002 about 3000 miles before I bought it.

a win win for me, it runs like a top.

In storage 20 years, I would walk away. Even if you are a decent mechanic.

Well it depends if it's been kept running all the time or not..... More information is needed to give a good reply.

I saw a 1992 GL1500 a year ago that the original owner was out for a ride on it. He only rode it occasionally but kept running it weekly since new. It only had 2,256 miles on it.
He has 10 kids and was working 3 jobs. They bought it before kids came along..... He was in his early 50s, it will outlast him.

If it has been kept running and up to date yes $6,500 would be a fair price to ask at those very low miles. Yes I would go over everything myself to be sure.
Does it have current up to date maintenance records?

Needless to say if they aren't kept running and not stored properly, gas not drained from the carbs, gas tank with old gas(rust remediation), old used oil in crank case all will be factors in value.

As others have said, you will need to put a lot of money and time into it to get it on the road. It is still a 20 year old bike. Not worth a penny over $4000 even if it was in perfect condition. Along with other things that you know you would have to do once you get it on the road a lot of the rubber items could start to leak. Fork seals, shifter o ring, vacuum lines and probably brittle, no telling what all will fail once you get it running. Get a nice 1800 wing for that price. Keep in mind that you would have to do all the work yourself of it would cost a lot of miney if you could find a shop that would wonk on a bike that old.

Good decision. 20 years sitting, pretty much every hose and piece of rubber in it is going to need to be replaced. That bike should probably just go to a museum where people can look at it instead of someone taking all the time and money to restore it.

2,500 miles in - or 20 years storage, 2000 GL1500, it's a cinch the sun hasn't ruined the seat or paint, things like radiator hoses been kept wet with OEM fill likely, no heating, no pressure, be a great bike yet. If worried about coolant or brake hoses, replace them with new but I'll bet they are fine. Hoses aren't just plain rubber. This ain't 1950 era stuff. I'd put new timing belts in ASAP, change oil & filter, change brake fluid & clutch fluid, maybe even a new air filter. Then I'd start it, but not before. Then, if all seemed OK, if no issues pop up, then I would put tires on it and enjoy many miles of smiles.

If it was stored in a barn and used as a rack to hold tack, might be some damage.

I have a 2000 S E now, but could sell either, not sure witch one I would keep. Probably not going to get it , the owner wants 6000.00 but he knows nothing about motorcycle, he is selling for a friend. His friend died so he selling it for the mans wife.
