The onboard compressor on my 99 Aspy works fine for increasing/decreasing the rear shocks but didn't seem capable of pumping up either of my tires when I tried to do it. Is it just a REALLY low PSI compressor or is something wrong with it?

Also, what is this "dessicant" that people have talked about replacing?

Be sure to read the owner's manual about how that works. It is real specific about how to get the air to only come out the outlet. Or you could have a leak or bad solenoid valve. It should have plenty of pressure for a tire as the shocks are even higher. What it doesn't have is a ton of volume so it can take some time. You also need to let it cool off after some pumping. It's all in the manual.
The desiccant is in the pump and removes moisture from the air. You can take it out and bake it to make it work again. It will change color when all dried out. Blue to pink as I recall, but don't quote me on that.

Is it easy/hard to get to the dessicant in the compressor to check it/replace it/bake it?

If you search here I think there might be a walk through. When I did mine, I had other things off, but I think just removing the seat and the left saddlebag will get you to it. The pump is just a snap ring but note the order of screens and felt filter and stuff. There is a picture somewhere of the proper stackup.
The service manual is your friend. Well worth the investment. I got mine on ebay for cheap. Honda service manuals are always top notch in ring binders, not like the joke I got from Kawasaki.

Is it worth spending the (sometimes) significantly more money for the actual Honda service manual or is Hanes or Clymer any good?

There is a specific air hose to use when inflating tires that has a depressor on both ends for the schrader valves. #14

My '94SE had the same problem, it is NOT worth the money to try to fix it.

I bought a Slime Air Compressor and leave it in the trunk.
Much cheaper and by far faster.

Honda manual is totally worth it. Just watch ebay and pick one up for a song.

have seen them down to $35 but they look 'well used'

I've got a '94 manual in PDF. It's 90 MB, too big to e-mail, but if you keep looking it's out there to download. Wish I could remember where I found it.

Paper manual would be nice, but I have an old computer set up in a corner of the garage that serves me well.

Not really much difference '93 thru 2000, you can find a service manual for any of those years and it will be applicable to your '99.

This is a very good tutorial, used it in conjunction with the OEM manual. It fills in the work gaps nicely.
