Intermittent backfire

Post by Shooter560 »

Started the bike up today and it developed an intermittent backfire/pop through the exhaust. Tracked it down to the front cylinder on the right. Tried changing the plug 3 times, but it’s still there, pulled cap and pop stopped but obviously running on 5.

Any suggestions as I’m at a loss, and starting to think it’s either a lead or maybe an igniter breaking down

Is this present at an idle and higher RPM? I would first do a compression test on the engine. Sounds like a misfire is occurring where an adjacent plug leads spark is jumping to your #1 lead. What was the spark plugs tip condition and for that side of engine white, black and compared to the left side? How well is the engine running otherwise?

Could also be a sticky valve.

Well after a day of pottering, tracing and head scratching I finally sorted it, one of the wires to the top igniter pickup had started to break causing the issue, why it was only affecting cyl 1 I have no idea, but wire cut and soldered and miss fire/pop has gone, it even revs smoother too, so maybe it’s been playing up a while
