GL1500 antenna repair

Post by Sidcar »

As if there isn’t enough trouble in this world I folded down my radio antenna a couple of days ago and it fell off. The bottom of the mast had snapped off where it hinges.
Quick search of eBay revealed some antennas across the pond but the shipping charges were £50-60 never mind the cost of the antenna so, as I have plenty of time on my hands I repaired the old one. I had bit of brass bar which I turned down and filed to shape a new hinge tag, threaded the other end then drilled and tapped the base of my old unit. The trickiest part was getting the old mast in the lathe as I’m short of space so my lathe is tucked in a corner. In the end I bored a hole in the cupboard next to the lathe and emptied some of the stuff out (where does it all come from!) to make way for the top of the mast and held it steady with a plastic disc.
The results don’t look to bad, I just need a bit of 1/8th dowel for a new hinge pin.
And it passed another day.
