Front brake master cylinder

Post by Elmobile »

I came across this post on the 1200 forum I believe.
I have unlinked the front and rear brake on my 1990 GL1500 SE because of the sidecar and put both brake front calipers on the front master using a double banjo with custom made stainless hose. While it is working fine, I wouldn't mind reducing the travel.
Could someone confirm that the piston diameter on the 1800 is larger than the one on the 1500?
The adjustable levers would be a bonus for sure :D
Thanks.

Hi,
If you are purchasing aftermarket adjustable levers(I bought wide blade show chrome, could only get those made for the 1800), the problem with these levers and the 1500 front brake master cyl is the brake light/cruise switch(same switch on both the 1800 and 1500) the lever does not activate it properly, its fits differently on the 1800, so I fitted an 1800 master cylinder. The only difference is the 1500 is a front hydraulic feed, the 1800 is a side feed. I have a stainless hose(HEL performance) on mine(1989 K model) with enough slack so it still fits and works perfect and has been fitted for 2 years now.
Clutch lever was no problem just fitted straight in(no need to change master cyl on clutch).
I didn't like the wide blade levers, so I fitted genuine 1800 levers (brake and clutch are both adjustable).
Hope this helps.

The best I can tell from looking at the service manuals is this.

1500 - piston OD 12.645 mm
1800 - piston OD 13.957 - 13.984 mm

So yes, it appears that the 1800 has a larger diameter master cylinder piston.

Wow I am impressed. Didn't think I could get the answer.
I do have a service manual for my 1500. Could you tell me where you found the info in it?
Just curious.
But thanks a lot. I put this on my list of upgrade... :D
Let you know how much of an improvement it brings...

Cheers.

The dimensions are in the 2nd chapter in the service manual for GL1500, and in the 1st chapter for GL1800.
