Headlight and foot brake light not working

Post by Jenneverett1 »

Hi everyone, I bought a ‘95 gl1500 and have done some services on it to prevent breakdowns when it is road ready. I am at the last point before I start riding it, but the headlight is not lighting up, and the brake light will not work with the foot pedal. The hand brake will activate the brake light though. I did check the 15 amp fuse... it is fine. I did purchase relays from our store, and they should arrive today or tomorrow.
What can I check? Any help will be welcome

Is the headlight inoperative on both high and low beams or just one of them? If both, then see if it comes on when you move the reverse lever up to reverse. Let us know what the results are from that.
For the brake light, it is likely the foot brake switch. It is down by the foot brake pedal. You might need to adjust and/or lube it.

If both high and low beams your start switch could be dirty and keeping the lights from coming back on.

I will try the reverse trick for the headlight when I get home from work today I did use reverse yesterday back in the bike out of my garage just to run it around a while as I had put seafoam in to the gas I am trying to run a full tank out and then refill with premium gasoline

Premium gas is not necessary unless you have a problem with pre-ignition (ping). Premium will only cost more money and the bike will get no benefit from it at all. The motor is designed to run on Regular grade 87 octane.

My only concern was the ethanol as that was not in the tanks when it was originally made I am not sure that I will get a quantifiable time of riding before we winterized to put it away

Premium fuel has ethanol doesn't it? Some places in the USA have non-ethanol fuel, I am not in a state that has non-ethanol.

Mine runs just fine on E10 regular, non-ethanol is really hard to find around here so I just get E10. Probably a good idea to fill with the non-ethanol if you do winter storage though. I don't bother, there's enough warm days in winter here that bike rarely sits more than a month without a ride.

OK the foot break switch adjustment just needed to be set in the right position somebody had loosened it as far as possible.
Now I am just hunting down the problem with the headlight
