Re: I smell gas
Check the vent hose from the tank, is it detached or kinked?

Re: I smell gas
How full do you fill your fuel tank? These are considered to be full when fuel hits the bottom of the filler neck. Filling above that point you run the risk of allowing fuel into the vent tube which leads to the filter canister. If that canister gets fuel in it, it will vent the fumes from time to time giving you that gas smell.

Re: I smell gas
if the vent in your gas cap is getting clogged up you can have this issue, mine was doing it bad recently, mostly when I parked but sometimes when stopped at a light. I soaked it in seafoam for 2 days and now no more gas smell.

Your vacuum fuel petcock could have a leak in the diaphragm also.

I'll second Ding Dongs comment! Look and see if the little tray at the front of the fill cover area under the filter, is wet sometimes. The kit to fix isn't very expensive, and simple to do.
