Replacing a couple of the relays in relay box left side
I have a 2000 GL1500 and it has a Hannigan trike kit on it. Have had some loss of power
issues and decided to replace relay 3 and 6. I cant seem to get that cover off
the box. It has some scratches on it like previous owner may have tried also.
Should I just destroy the cover and replace the relays then put it back together and
consider the job done. OR am I missing something here. Look at the picture and see
if you see something. I took the screws out of the mount but that doesn't give quite
enough room.

Re: Replacing a couple of the relays in relay box left side
I read on this board of a few people that have experienced what you are experiencing now.
One individual ended up modifying the trike plastic in that area.
Another individual was able to take the fuse/relay panel loose enough to replace the relays he needed to replace.
Read through this post to see if there is any info you can use.
viewtopic.php?p=185043#p185043
Then, do a search in the GL1500 forum for Relay Cover or Fuse Coves.

It looks if the fuses were removed it might sneak out of there. When the cover is out trim a little plastic off that cover on the left side for next time.

THANKS MikeB
I will try pulling the fuses and see if I get some more room.
I'll check the link as well.
Thanks again.
ANYONE ELSE GOT AN IDEA. I am not really in favor of cutting the trike body, may
see if I can take a mounting bolt or two out and let the body pull away enough.

Re: Replacing a couple of the relays in relay box left side
I recall someone else having this issue with a trike, they trimmed the trike body in this area and with bolts securing the relay box removed, they got theirs pulled out.
I've looked at it on my Lehman but mine uses a vertical piece of steel to hold those rear two rubbers, easily bent or deflected enough I don't think I'll have a problem. The relay box is open in back, not sealed. Make Courtesy your "Code of the Road" …

Re: Replacing a couple of the relays in relay box left side
How about if you use a couple of wooden house door shims, one above and one below, and tap them just a little bit under the body to spread it out just a bit. Not enough to damage anything but it looks like it wouldn't take much to give you the room you need. And then you could trim just a little off the back edge of the relay cover to make it a bit easier for next time.

Re: Replacing a couple of the relays in relay box left side
Considering the back of that box is open anyway, I would leave the lid off, after you're done. After reading here about quite a few people that have swapped a relay on the side of the road to get home, having to fight that cover roadside would not be pleasant. (Add darkness and rain for the full effect) Maybe make a sticker with the relay functions/positions to go inside the side cover.
BTW I blame the whole thing on too many wheels!

NEXT QUESTION
I ordered two relays (G8MS-H30 GL1500 Relay) from GoldwingDocs to
replace relay 3 and relay 6.
Are these same relays replacements for all 8 of the relays in that relay box?
If so, I am thinking I'll order more and just replace all of them.

Re: Replacing a couple of the relays in relay box left side
The relays all have the same foot prints so they will work in any circuit. The 30A relay will work just fine to replace the 20A relay but you do not want to go the other way around. A 30A relay will carry more current through its contacts than a 20A relay but each one is powered by the same low current 12V.

Re: Replacing a couple of the relays in relay box left side
AAAAAAAAA, FINALLY
Ok, so I went back to the garage to look again. I took the mounting bolts out and
wiggled and wiggled, no pressure, just wiggled it over on to its side and it just
slid right out completely. So I replaced the 3 and 6 and slid it back in the same,
on its side, way that it came out and put it all back together and reconnected
the negative cable at the battery. Turned on the key and started it up. Everything
seems to ok. Now we hfope that corrected thew problem but one thing for sure
I can replace that those relays without doing any mods. Just have to get it in the
right place and position and out it comes. By the way relays 1, 2, 3, 4 ,5, 6 and
8 are all the same. Mine are all original Omron. Number 7 looks different in mine
but may have been replace. Thanks everyone for the input.

As I recall one relay is actually a different type, the ones WingAdmin sells won't work for that one. The other 7 are all the same.

You should be fine. The one odd ball relay is odd because it is a 10Amp relay and the others are 20Amp. Other than that, they are the same.

Since I have never had a relay fail, I've never researched it through. However, I do carry one of each relay as spares on the bike.
All the 20A relays have the same part number. So it is not one of them.
The Blue relay, relay #7, is the 10A relay. It has a different part number and it is the one with the normally closed contact.
If you replace that relay with one of the relays you got from Goldwing Docs, you need to reinstall the Blue Omron 10A relay in position #7.

Ok, so today I had some time and I replaced the rest of the relays. Took me about 40 minutes
start to finish. Its all about knowing how to twist that relay mounting so that it slides out of
that close place. Back together and ready to ride. Replaced 3 and 6 first time around, today
I replaced 1, 2, 4, 5, and 8. 7 is the blue one so I left it in there.
