Looking for input on issue B4 buying 99 Wing.

Post by FM-USA »

I'm looking and considering a fairly well maintained 1999SE with 60K miles.
Owner let's me test ride but not remove any panels to check it out.

It has part throttle lag/miss but once reving to around 2K rpms it runs smooth & strong through each gear.
It idles fine until off throttle and it sounds like a (consistent) 1 spark plug miss.
I'm thinking it's a vac leak unless someone has had this before & it's a bad idle circuit but I'm doubting that due to the consistent miss.

Owner says it began this miss as he was riding about 1 hour after refueling. This eliminates poor fuel. Peaking into the fuel door the filter is OEM and appears clean. High rpm's under load eliminates plugged filter & low fuel pressure.

Any ideas or thoughts?

My 88 had a miss. One bad ignition coil.Very weak spark compared to the others.
Another fellow found his miss was low compression.He/we determined that a valve was sticking open a bit.Rotating the engine backwards a few times over a couple of days relieved the trapped oil pressure on the hydraulic lash adjusters..A bit of sea foam and a fresh oil change sorted it out.
Because of its age,I would also suspect "some" vacuum leaks.Plan on replacing hoses, timing belt and every ounce of fluid in the entire bike as a preventative measure.

Virgil, most are my sentiments also but I cannot work on it until I commit to buying it.
I was hoping for some who actually knew the issue through experience. I know, I know... wishful thinking.
I'm still debating on the bike, he says few are looking at it = #2. yellow flag.

My 1991 Wing I've become well aware of vacuum leaks, posted a few pix & very frugal fixes of very expensive hoses.
OEM prices are like choking a dead man on a noose. Noose (is the Wing), dead man (stuck with the bike), prices (we can finagle).

I understand. The symptoms can lead you to different areas.Take heart tho.65k miles???It's barely broke in..The rest is a result of 21years.
If you can't get a positive confirmation of the problems, you could "price reduce" it for the worst case scenario.

Lowest $$, quite correct.

New piece of info from the owner.
He said in pouring rain or car washes the bike had a hard time restarting until it dried out. So to me that means a coil. But oddly at 2K+ rpm's it runs normal.

Now 'IF' I can only get him to let me pull some covers........ .. . . . .

Not so much the coils but the drains. The plug boots may be carbon tracked.

My '94 with 82,000 miles had a loping idle issue when I looked at it, but everything else had been taken care of very well with meticulous records.
Owner said the bike sat for a few months and since that time it had the idle issue, and had it in the past as well after sitting.
He said he would run a tank or 2 with BG44 through it and it would clear up.
I offered him $250 less ($3,250 total) because of it and he accepted.
I tried the BG44 for 2 tanks full strength and it did not help.
I ended up doing the toothpick mod on mine and it fixed it.
I did not have an issue once I got above 1000 rpm's though, it was just an idle issue.

Well so far all the issues & their fixes are pretty much surface repairs.
I read up on the toothpick trick, yeeeaaah, rather just pull the carbs and bowls to see what's in there.
