box under fuel tank?

Post by andcam »

Hi all,

I'm a new Gl1500 owner and your collective wisdom here has been invaluable to me! I'm going through doing some basic maintenance (brakes, fluids, bulbs etc) and familiarising myself with the bike and I can't identify what this is:

The black box, under the tank, with a white wire coming out of it connected to nowhere. An alarm perhaps, given what looks like a speaker/buzzer to the left of it? (there's no other signs of the bike being alarmed).

I have the Haynes manual and no clues from there (that I've found).

TIA!

It doesn't look stock. Perhaps an aftermarket owner installed alarm system.

Aftermarket security system for sure. The white wire is the antenna. Too bad if you don't have the key fob to use it.

If I don't use Facebook or Twitter, do I still have to do Social Media Distancing????
Those who say it cannot be done should try not to interrupt those who are doing it.

I think you're right. I'll trace back the cabling and see if I can rip it out.

rip slowly, don't want to break something useful.

Couple thoughts before RIPPING it out.
Why not try and trace back to the previous and original owners, they might still have the FOB. Or at least tell you what make that alarm is to get a FOB.
You have an alarm install outlet who might know what it is by looking at it?

Good point and I considered keeping it but I really don't need the alarm where I am and 30 years in it's another point of failure I'd rather do without on an aged bike.

it's not really viable in the UK to trace owners, unless I got extremely lucky making the plate public on social media... which I don't want to do.

So it was indeed an alarm, as is pretty obvious now it's out! Was pretty simple to remove and reconnect the spliced ignition lines at the back of the fusebox.
