press the start button... then a click noise then a buzz sound
I went for a ride today .. nice weather in the 70's ... I stopped by a friends house... when leaving I press the start button nothing happened ... I pressed it again and a click noise followed by a buzz sound... sounds as though the noise was coming near the battery ... .. was puzzled for it never happened before ... about the fourth time I tried to crank it... it started ... got home pulled off the right cover to check the battery,,, all seemed secured .. I pressed the start button and it started right up... kneeling next to the right side battery area I turned it off and started it again 5 or 6 times and it started each time without hesitation (wouldn't you know it)... going to dive into it tomorrow but asking what others here may think it is ??? and what to look for

My bet would be corroded battery connection or a bad ground on batt Neg lead.

Or the battery is on its way out. Or the charging system is being intermittent and did not correctly charge on your trip away, but did on your trip home. Electrical gremlins is at work.DenverWinger wrote: ↑Sat Sep 19, 2020 8:18 pm My bet would be corroded battery connection or a bad ground on batt Neg lead.

Re: press the start button... then a click noise then a buzz sound
You rode it. It sat. It wouldn't start.
When it DID start, did it sound normal, or tired?
If it sounded tired, it's probably time to replace the battery.
The click was the solenoid (back by the battery), and the buzzing would be the solenoid not getting enough power to stay held in. It makes contact, pulls the voltage down, releases because there isn't enough voltage, then once it's released there's enough voltage to pull back in . . .over and over and over, several times per second.
If it sounded normal when it started, this either means bad connection(s) or a failing starter.

Re: press the start button... then a click noise then a buzz sound
And if "buzzed" long enough, hell on contacts in solenoid itself. I'm with others, connection or corrosion … or battery.
Couple weeks ago my wife went to mow, soon back in the house, Wheel Horse would not start, nothing. I had just put a full charged new battery in it the night before too, "dang it"!
I went out, tried wiggling leads at battery, tapped the solenoid, tapped the starter motor, checked the terminal bolts for tightness, NOTHING. I even jumped the solenoid, nothing, not even a spark. Checked battery voltage with meter & probes, 12.94 VDC. I had simply unhooked the old battery (6 years old, I put in when I repowered the tractor) … and popped the new one in and tightened the bolts. I had not started it though. I had not scrubbed the flat large ring terminals either figuring the bolts would pull them tight. I got my 7/16 wrench, took terminal bolts loose, sprayed the ring terminals with acid detector & protectant to clean them, wiped it off with Scott toweling, used new SS bolts & washers and reconnected, BAM … tractor started like new.

Re: press the start button... then a click noise then a buzz sound
I wish to thank all who offered suggestions ... I checked the usual ... battery connections...grounds on frame and motor... when I got to the starter relays A & B ... there was corrosion and typical dulling of the pins on a twenty year old Wing.. I pulled the fuses and sprayed Deoxit on the connections ... put things back together ... so far all works as it should ... when I'm not riding I hook up the Battery JR maintainer ... the battery was bought new February 2019 the battery charge is/was 12.8 ... guess the next time... if/when time allows.. going to look at the starter... again thanks to all and will update what I find

If you want, I have the starter out of my 99 that I pulled at 80,000 miles and put in another I had available to me. I was going to clean this one up as it was slower than I thought it should be but never got around to cleaning it out of the carbon dust and relube it, (maybe new brushes??). I no longer have a 1500. If you are up to doing it you can have it for $35 shipped to you.in2it wrote: ↑Mon Sep 21, 2020 8:11 pm I wish to thank all who offered suggestions ...
