Engine oil getting into final drive?

Post by hclemons »

I rescued a 1995 GL1500A from an estate sale after it had sat for over 10 years.
Usual stuff rebuild master cylinders, drain and clena fuel tank, rebuild carbs....
I now only have a about 5 miles on it and have discovered the final drive leaking.
In checking, the drive is way over filled and I was wondering if it is possible that
leaking seals could allow engine oil to migrate into the final drive? All fluids appear to
have just been changed when the bike was parked (fresh and clean) but I have only
test driven the bike and am in the process of changing all fluids.

Very doubtful.

I'd suspect that someone filled the final rive while it was on the side stand rather than the center stand.

I don't think it is possible. Drive shaft between output shaft and final drive, no way oil migrates all the way down there and past a couple seals without motor running dry and/or final drive fluid leaking out.

There is a cap at top of final drive that lets it breath as it heats and cools... maybe yours is missing and some water got in there. or like last guy said they didn't fill it properly in the first place.

If it were mine I would drain and refill. Might also be a good idea to pull the drive shaft / U Joint and put fresh moly on there.

I drained the extra fluid while on the center stand and put 10 mile on it and checked. The level stayed good. As suggested, I think the last owner filled it while on the side stand.
Runs great. Timing belt on order (dont trust the lack of records on a 25 year old bike).
Thanks for the quick response.
