Do you still sell them with SAE (1/4-28) screws or the correct metric thread screws (7-1.0)? This is not some cheap decorative trim piece where "close enough" might be okay for some people It just seemed counterintuitive to me that the flat head screws in the countersunk holes (which are supposed to be the main reason this brand is better than other brands) would be the wrong size. We all talk about JIS screwdrivers being important on our wings and then use 1/4" screws in 7mm holes with Locktite.

Andy, I bought one a few weeks ago and it came with all the correct screws and it fit perfectly. This is a good price for a good product.

Purchased one September 28th and the screws provided were not metric. I used the original socket head cap screws because the correct thread size is more important than the cap screw seating properly, being aluminum the screws will make their own seating surface when tightened since they are going onto an angled surface. At least that is my thought, I will check them after a few hundred miles and see if they have come loose.

Mine were allen head screws that I took out when I installed the Blackwing brace. The ones that came with the brace fit perfectly. Did you buy the brace from the Blackwing Lady? It sounds to me like your screws that you took out were the wrong ones and maybe had the threads messed up.

Welcome to the forum.

While I have concerns about use of SAE threaded bolts in metric threaded holes (hence my specific question to the OP whom has still not responded), I would absolutely not recommend using either the OEM socket head cap screws nor the Superbrace hex head cap screws with countersunk holes. Neither of these cap screws will seat correctly, torque values will be incorrect and the length of thread engagement is wrong. IMHO you should remove the socket head cap screws and either install in accordance with Blackwing instructions or return to all Honda parts and torque to Honda specifications. There is a high risk with what you have done.

The difference in engagement length in minimal and if they have loosened when I check them in a few hundred miles I will take them to a shop and have the brace counter bored to the proper size for the 7mm screw. I wasn't real concerned because aluminum is very soft and will deform under the pressure of the screw seating which will give me an exact location for counter boring it later. But in general I agree with what your are saying but I would rather modify the brace because it is a great fit other than the counter sink. I searched around and can't find any supplier selling the correct 7mmx1.0 flat head screw so decided to give this a shot. Maybe a bad idea but in a week or so I will get it counter bored correctly for the screws. Thanks for the reply and I will make the proper correction to the part soon.

I did get a set in March 2017.
I had raised the issues of the incorrect bolts (Standard vs Metric) in an earlier post:
viewtopic.php?f=6&t=51255&p=300577#p300577
I did not get an answer as well. The bolts provided are definitely standard...

I manage to get some M8 from Europe and the install is on my winter list.
However IF I could get some M7x1 I would love it!!!

I will contact Blackwing Lady and see what happen.

I noticed the SAE hardware, too. After finding that even McMaster Carr didn't have the right bolts, I understand why they went with a close imperial thread. Now that Maryland Metrics is no more I had no idea where to get the right parts. So having a lathe I just made my own. Since they screw into nuts welded to a steel backing plate, another option would be to change those nuts. Those are the OCD ways to fix this. But honestly, since they torque to spec, I'm sure the supplied hardware would be fine.

Here is the reply I got from them on the screws.

You are correct, we cannot find the proper 7m screws. That said we found that because the tolerance is so precise
that the fact that it needs to be frozen to be placed in the bike. This means that the brace will stay in place. We have not had one returned because it came loose after it got placed in the bike Thanks for your concern

The main reason the Blackwing brace is so much more solid than the Superbrace is because it uses the countersunk holes and angled machine screws, that self-center and hold the brace from moving laterally. The Superbrace has just the socket head bolts that clamp it down, but don't prevent lateral movement. Using the wrong (non-angled screws) will cause the brace to not perform as it was designed.
